System of titles of British nobility
5What did Britain Want?
- Castlereagh was not fighting over any European
lands because Great Britain is isolated from the
rest of Europe. - What Britain fought for was colonies in Africa
and Asia.
6Italy
- Great Britain doesnt care as long as Morat
(Napoleons brother-in law) is in the throne. He
is willing to offer parts of Italy to compensate
Austrias lost territory during the war. He
supports Bourbon. - King Ferdinand IV to Nepal to the throne. Pope
Pipus VII should be the ruler of Papal States.
7Scandinavia
- Castlereagh doesnt like the Russians
acquisition of Finland from the Swedes, but its
not big enough to go to war over. Sweden gets
Norway in exchange for Finland to Russia. That
way its no big deal.
8Switzerland
- Great Britain views Switzerland as a neutral
state.
9Croatian and Dalmatian Coasts.
- Britain supports efforts to give the land to
Austria.
10Spain and Portugal
- Believes a Bourbon king should be returned to
rule Spain and a Braganca prince should be in
charge of Portugal
11Navy
- Britain had a very large and extensive navy that
controlled the seas with force. This helped them
conquer foreign countries relatively easily. It
also relied on boats for it trade because Great
Britain is isolated from other European countries.
12Colonies
- Because Britain was isolated and had a powerful
navy they did not want any of Europe. It would
just give diplomats more bickering problems.
Castlereagh was willing to give some of the
colonies back to the former owners. Great Britain
Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Malta, the
Ionia Islands , Hapland, Ceyland, and islands in
the West Indies. It also receives Holland, but
must give Holland 2 million pounds. Britain
returns Dutch East Indies to Holland.
13Reparation
- Though France supported Napoleon, Castlereagh
didnt want to humiliate the people. Instead he
thought making a stable and satisfied French
could bring peace and prosperity. He thinks
forcing France to pay countries back would hurt
economy and destabilize the French government
make people angry. This could lead to revolution.
Opposes requiring France to pay reparations.
14Return of Plundered Art
- Nothing was stolen from Great Britain so
Castlereagh isnt very worried about getting
treasure back. He is worried about putting
another Bourbon member on the throne. The Frogs
are already hesitant. Fears foreign armies
marching home with masterpieces may infuriate
French people causing a revolt against Louis
XVIII.
