Trowbridge Town Council
  • ANNUAL REPORT
  • 2005 - 2006

2
Trowbridge Town Council
  • Trowbridge Town Council has continued to serve
the whole community of Trowbridge, as it has done
since 1974. 2005/06 has been another successful
year of progress for the Town and the Council.
There have been no changes to councillors
representing the town in the past year. Council
and committee meetings continue to be held most
Tuesdays at the Civic Hall and are advertised in
notice boards and on our website.
  • In October last year the Town Council saved the
Trowbridge Information Centre (TIC) from threat
of closure and since then the service has
increased income and has recorded 27,000
enquiries from the public in the year. The centre
adjacent to the Park and multi-storey car-park
provides a six day week service to residents and
visitors, assisted by volunteers from the Friends
    of Trowbridge Information Centre.
  • Over 20,000 visitors enjoyed Trowbridge Museum
in 2005/6 including 1,500 school children on
organised educational trips. The Museum attracted
40,000 in grants to restore the Queen Caroline
Banner and fund school holiday activities in the
museum and local schools. The Museum, in the
Shires centre is free and open Tues Sat from
10am. Thanks go to the Friends of Trowbridge
    Museum for their continued support.
  • The Community Services team were very active
with a number of groups in our community. Simone
Matthews joined us as the Sports and Arts
    Development Worker and has successfully
introduced Lacrosse, Yoga and Gymnastics amongst
other activities to a number of our schools.
Lorna Gibson also joined us as Grants Officer,
helping local organisations to make the most of
funding available, attracting over 100,000 into
the community, as well as distributing the
Councils own grants amounting to over 30,000
  • The e-Trowbridge project has grown yet again,
with facilities in Steeple Ashton, Southwick, the
TIC and The Cabin in Seymour coming on-line.
Computer clubs are being run, assisted by
volunteers at Longfield and Studley Green. The
Christmas lights switch-on was a highlight of the
year, complete with snow! In the summer we also
contributed to the West Wilts Show, Carnival,
TAFF, sports roadshow and beach party.

Trowbridge Town Council
  • The Town has continued to develop, with
proposals for significant housing developments in
the town coming forward at Paxcroft Brook and
Green Lane. The Town Council gives its
    observations on all planning applications
affecting the town. Later in 2006 should see
improvements to the Town Bridge gateway around
the Blind House and the start of re-development
at St Stephens Place. The Riverside opposite
County Hall should also make progress towards
    realising significant leisure development,
including a new cinema. Both of these are part of
the wider umbrella project called Transforming
Trowbridge into a County Town you can be proud
of. We have also extended the CCTV scheme at
Spitfire Retail Park and are indebted to the
Shires shopping centre for their continued
support in monitoring the Town cameras.
  • The Civic Hall continues to provide an excellent
venue for small and large groups, this year
increasing income and utilisation to minimise
subsidy, whilst investing in improvements and a
series of own events which will continue
throughout 2006. The Halls team also now run
    Longfield Community Centre available for
community groups to hire. Both venues offer
grants to community and charity users to
    subsidise hire costs.
  • The Town Council also works with Trowbridge
Community Area Future (TCAF) to develop services
    throughout Trowbridge and the surrounding
parishes. This year we have worked to achieve
improvements to the rail services and coordinated
objections to the proposed closure of health care
facilities in the District. We have also worked
closely with schools and the Wiltshire
    Constabulary to improve our community.
  • Thanks must go to Douglas Ross, who after 14
years as Town Clerk retired in November 2005,
having overseen the development of Trowbridge
Town Council into the 21st Century, preparing us
for the challenges ahead. Doug continues to work
closely with the Town Council, as one of the TCAF
project officers. Lance Allan was appointed Town
Clerk and officially took up the role on Dougs
    retirement.
