Objective

• to provide information for decision-making on
  thematic choices for joint research initiatives
  at the European level
• Two-step procedure
• A mapping exercise on research priorities in
  Europe
• An analysis of agreed thematic areas for future
  co-operation

Mapping Exercise

• data request to HERA partners and other European
  funding agencies (can be ensured through ESF/SCH)
• Questions
• Which research areas of the best scientific
  quality and/or most relevant and innovative
  within the humanities and in the society at large
• a) in your country
• b) in Europe ?

• Expected feedback
• 4-5 themes from each organisation with short
  descriptions
• some organisations might not have explicit
  research priorities, but all information provided
  will make a valuable contribution, e.g.,
  suggestions on the topics of thematic reports

• Reporting
• a report focusing on research clusters,
  priorities, programmes, and emerging areas will
  be published
• possible comments before the final report is
  submitted
• The report will form the basis for NBs
  recommendation on thematic areas for further
  investigation

• for future co-operation
• implementation working groups of 4-5 researchers
  rapporteur
• Reports will focus on
• describing the thematic area in question
• identifying strenghts weaknesses
• recommendations on relevant research topics

• Problems in discussing the questions addressed in
  the mapping exercise, especially within those
  organisations focusing in bottom up funding
• Finding a common understanding of the themes for
  further investigation
• How shall we deal with interdisciplinary research?
