Title: Stop talking rubbish, start thinking about recycling waste
1 Stop talking rubbish, start
thinking about recycling waste
Waste management in Guernsey
2What does Guernsey do?
About 19 of household waste in Guernsey is
recycled. This compares well with England at 12.
What is the problem?
Guernsey has to put rubbish into a landfill site
at Mont Cuet.
These sites have a finite life i.e. once they are
full no more rubbish can go in.
3What are the solutions?
Suggestions have been made for a Waste to Energy
plant to be built. This would burn waste and turn
any energy given off into useful heat energy.
This energy can be used to make electricity or
heat buildings.
4How can you help?
You can help by reducing, re-using and recycle
waste.
Why should you do this?
To protect your environment.
To reduce the amount of pollution released into
the Environment by the landfill sites i.e. water
pollution by chemicals and air pollution by
methane gas produced by decomposition.
To save money.
5Households in Guernsey produce more and more
waste each year.
Every year we throw away about a tonne of waste
per household.
The fact is it isnt really rubbish.
Lots of materials we throw away could be used
again.
6Recycling the facts
Glass
Glass jars and bottles could be washed and
re-used.
Glass can be crushed and recycled, this reduces
the amount of new materials needed to make new
glass.
7Paper
Recycling paper saves trees, because less wood
pulp needs to be imported to make paper.
We also use less water and energy in
manufacturing the paper.
8Cans
About 600 food and drink cans are used in a year
in each household. The cans are either made of
steel or aluminium.
Aluminium cans have a high scrap value but many
are just thrown away and not recycled.
9Plastics
Plastics can be recycled and used in a variety of
ways e.g. as a filling for sleeping bags or
fleeces.
Plastic bags can be re-used.
Many parts of cars are made of plastics which can
be recycled.
Unfortunately not much household plastic waste is
currently recycled.
10The solution is to recycle more.

11For you to do.
1. Complete the sheet on your weekly household
waste.
2. Design a poster to encourage young people to
recycle.
3. Write a letter to the Guernsey Press saying
Why you are concerned about waste.
4. In groups of about 4 plan and act out a sketch
on the thoughtless throwing away of rubbish
by young people.
