I Kings 19 1-4
  • This is a story of Elijahs battle with
    discouragement, despondency and depressionand
    ultimately Gods provisions for him.

Thrill of Victory Agony of Defeat
  • Elijah defeats the 450 prophets of Baal and the
    400 prophets of Asherah. People bow down and
    acknowledge The Lord, He is God.
  • Instead of rejoicing Elijah ends up hundreds of
    miles away hidden in a cave.
  • Elijah appears despondent perhaps even suffering
    from depression. He prays that God would take his
    life.

John the Baptist
  • When John saw Jesus approaching he states,
    Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins
    of the world.
  • Herod ultimately puts John in prison
  • While in prison he sends his disciples to Jesus
    to ask, Are you the one who was to come or
    should we expect another?
  • A few verses later Jesus praises John and
    compares him to Elijah (Matt. 1114)
  • Yet both men struggled with times of doubt and
    depression.
