Overview of our project partner, Home-Hi
  • An independent local middle school for girls
    currently with 35 students.

Curriculum includes a diverse selection of math,
science, and fine arts classes.
Strong desire to expose girls to computers and
technology at an early age.

Project Overview
Mission
Introduce Home Hi middle school girls to
science and engineering through a hands-on
learning experience.
Development and implementation of
computer-related project.
Project Partners request
Solution
Teach the girls basic programming and robotics
using the Lego Mindstorm kits.

  • Plan
  • 5th and 6th grade student groups
  • weekly lessons
  • Introductory exercises
  • Daily Subject
  • Robot building
  • Software program coding
  • Group Reflections

Requirements 7 Lego Mindstorms kits Teacher
Supervision Computers

Our students will be using LEGO
MINDSTORMSRobotics Invention System 2.0
  • The kit comes with
  • RCX microcomputer
  • 2 touch sensors
  • 1 light sensor
  • 2 motors
  • IR (infrared) tower
  • connecting wires
  • lots of LEGO pieces!

8
Programming with RCX code
Based off of LOGO, the commands are quite simple
and easily understandable
RCX code is a drag drop programming
environment
9
Using Legos, we will teach students about parts
of machines that go into a complete robot.
Example
Different Rotation Speed
Our second lesson dealt with gears and their
possible uses.
10
So far we have met with the girls twice.
11
We have also worked on developing a website in
order to
help record our lessons for others to implement
and adapt in the future
provide the girls with a fun, hands-on learning
experience.
12
By the end of the semester we would like to
achieve the following
Leave the girls with an idea of basic programming
and robotics skills.
Have a battle bots competition between the
groups of 5th and 6th grade girls.
Have an fully laid out lesson plan that is clear
and can be implemented and adapted to other
curriculums.
