Standards for Electrical Products

• Standards are developed by the Instituto
  Argentino de Normalización (IRAM). Argentine
  Institute of Standards
• IRAM standards are voluntary in nature.
• IRAM studies standards for all types of
  electrical equipment without limitations on
  voltage
• Low voltage defined as V 1000 V (ac)
• High voltage defined as V gt 1000 V (ac)
• Most of the IRAM standards for electrical
  equipment are based on IEC standards.

Standards for Electrical ProductsProcess for
Developing New Standards

• The process to develop new standards can be
  inititated by any interested sector.
• Consumer, product, general interest and
  government sectors participate in the process of
  developing these standards.
• The time required to develop a new standards is
  normally from 1 to 5 years.
• Standards are now being developed by the Mercosur
  countries for later adoption as national
  standards.

Standards for Electrical Products Revision of
Existing Standards

• Revisions can be proposed by any interested
  sector.
• The sectors that participated in the development
  of the initial standard participate in the
  revision process.
• The revised standard is effective as soon as it
  is published.
• Revised standards affect the products which were
  covered by the previous edition.
• The timing for compliance of the new edition
  depends on the nature of the changes.

Expectations

• Regional standards development IRAM
  participates in the standards activities of the
  Mercosur Standards Committee (Comité Mercosur de
  Normalización) (CMN) and the Pan American
  Commission of Technical Standards (Comisión
  Panamericana de Normas Técnicas) (COPANT).
• IRAM is a member of ISO, and Argentina, through
  the Argentine Electrotechnical Committee (Comité
  Electrotécnico Argentino), was a member of IEC
  since 1913.

Standards for Electrical Products Impact on
Importing Products

• Safety requirements of applicable IRAM or IEC
  standards are mandatory by Resolution Nº 92/98 of
  the Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Mining
  (S.I.C. y M.).
• This Resolution is equally applicable to domestic
  products and imports.
• For imports, Customs requires a Declaration of
  Conformity (until June 18, 1999) or a
  certification from an organization recognized by
  the federal Office of Interior Commerce.
