3Two phases
- Phase 1 consulted on proposals for a revised UK
wide framework for pre-registration nursing
education - Ended Summer 2008
- Phase 2 will develop and publish new Standards
for pre-registration nursing education - Proposed publication date September 2010
4Outline principles
In September 2008 Council agreed the principles
to shape a new framework for pre-registration
nursing education and enable the second phase of
the project to be progressed.
5Equality Impact Assessment
- Initial assessment of the principles agreed by
Council - Dynamic process throughout the project
- Additional issues will be identified as
appropriate and action taken - The assessment will be regularly updated and
published on the NMC website
6Phase 2 Timeline
- Developing new standards and requirements January
December 2009 - Consultation January to March 2010
- New standards ready Autumn 2010
- Earliest introduction of new programmes Autumn

- Looking at how new programmes can be introduced
- Working with Advisory Group
- Establishing generic and field working groups,
targeted reference group and other ways to ensure
people can have their say including e-portal - Identifying the knowledge, skills and attitudes
needed - Looking at new teaching, learning and assessment
requirements - Communicating key messages through FAQs and
monthly website bulletin

- The role of the working group will be to assist
in developing generic competencies and new
requirements for teaching, learning and
assessment, inclusive of community and public
health practice. - Involves shaping and commenting on proposals,
speaking to others and feeding back views. - The generic working group will meet in London on
- 6 May

9Targeted reference group April to September 2009
- The role of the targeted reference group is to
inform and support the working groups in
developing generic and field competencies, and
new requirements for teaching, learning and
assessment, inclusive of community and public
health practice. - Involves shaping and commenting on proposals,
speaking to others and feeding back views via the
e-portal. -
10Field groups June to September 2009
- Working groups for each field will be identified
by May - Similar role to generic group but focusing on
field specific competencies and requirements - The adult field group will consider EU general
care - requirements
- Field groups will include some experts from
- the generic working group
- the targeted reference group
- others
