DTSs Mission Statement

• Is to formulate, coordinate and deliver
  information, services and programs that will
  mobilize public and private resources to
  establish effective public policy and integrated
  programs to improve highway safety in Illinois.

Illinois Accomplishments

• 2006 was the safest year on Illinois roadways in
  more than 80 years.
• 1,254 traffic deaths on Illinois roadways, the
  lowest total since 1,065 deaths recorded in 1924.
• Safety belt usage is 88 percent.
• Child Passenger Safety Seat usage is 85.4
  percent.

• 1,000 or less fatalities by 2008.
• Safety belt usage rate to 90 percent.
• Reduce impaired driving on our roadways.
• Provide law enforcement the tools to reduce
  fatalities on our roadway.

Illinois Problem

• In 2006, Illinois had 1,254 fatalities, 479 were
  alcohol-related.
• In Illinois 38.1 percent of crash fatalities are
  alcohol-related.
• IDOT is working to reduce the number of
  fatalities caused by impaired driving.
• Around 50,000 DUI arrests are made each year in
  Illinois.

Illinois Comprehensive Highway Safety Plan

• Illinois long term plan to reduce traffic
  related deaths and injuries on Illinois highways.
• Focuses on the 4 Es Engineering, Enforcement,
  Education and Emergency Medical Services.
• The goal is to deliver a more focused and
  coordinated safety effort.

• Developing aggressive highway safety programs.
• Legislation - primary safety belt law.
• Developing new partnerships.
• Focusing on reducing injuries and fatalities on
  our roadways.
• Working with law enforcement agencies to enforce
