Title: Dolphins

1
Dolphins
  • Ocean Dolphins and Pink Dolphins

2
Compare and Contrast
  • A comparison tells how two or more things are
alike. Clue words such as like or as show
    similarities.
  • A contrast tells how two or more things are
different. Clue words such as but or unlike show
    differences.

3
Pink Dolphins
  • Live in rivers, not in the oceans.
  • Eat small turtles, crabs, cat fish, and other
    fish.
  • They have many teeth that help them to crush the
    shells and eat the turtles.
  • They send out pulses of sound, from inside their
foreheads. These pulses travel through the water,
and when the pulses hit an object, such as a
fish, the sounds bounce back to the dolphin.
  • (echolocation)

4
Flexibility
  • Pink dolphins are very flexible they can even
touch their tale to their nose. Unlike the pink
dolphin, ocean dolphins are not flexible they do
    not bend very well.
  • Think About It
  • Why do you think flexibility is so important for
    the pink dolphin?

5
Physical Appearance
  • Pink dolphins can also be found in light gray or
    brown colors.
  • Unlike the dolphins that swim in the ocean, pink
dolphins do not have a tall, pointed fin their
back instead, they have a low ridge which makes
    them difficult to spot.
  • Pink Amazon River dolphins range from 6 - 10 feet
long and weigh up to 355 pounds when they are
    fully grown.
  • Pink dolphins are smaller than sea dolphins but
they have longer snouts, which helps them to hunt
for food at the bottom of the river.

6
Pods
  • Pink dolphins have no natural predators in the
Amazon River other than humans, therefore they
are usually found alone or in pairs hunting for
    food.
  • Sometimes pink dolphins form pods of 5 to 8
    members for herding fish
  • Think About It
  • Why do dolphins in the ocean form pods (or
    groups)?

7
More about Dolphins
  • Pink dolphins sleep upside down, but ocean
    dolphins do not.
  • Both ocean dolphins and pink dolphins are
    intelligent and sociable.
  • Both ocean dolphins and pink dolphins use
echolocation to locate objects in the water.
  • Dolphins cannot breathe underwater, they have a
blow hole which they use to blow out water in
    their lungs.
