Polar Bears

• Polar bears are large meat eating bears. The
  males stand from eight to eleven feet tall and
  generally weigh from 500 to 1,000 pounds. The
  females usually stand about eight feet tall and
  weigh between 400 and 600 pounds.
• They are powerful swimmers who hunt seals in the
  water. They can reach speeds of up to 6mph in
  the water.
• They can run in burst up to 25 mph.
• Polar bears have two types of fur. They have
  thick woolly fur close to the skin that keeps
  them warm and they also have hollow guard hairs
  that stick up to protect them from getting wet.
  Their white fur camouflages them in the snow and
  ice which is useful for hunting adaptations.

• The polar bear is the largest member of the bear
  family
• It is estimated that there are between 21,000 and
  28,000 polar bears in the world.
• The ratio of males to females is one to one.
• A litter typically consists of one or two cubs.
  The cubs remain with their mother for up to two
  and a half years.
• Polar bears live in icy Artic areas of Alaska,
  Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia. They
  inhabit Arctic sea ice, water, islands , and
  continental coastlines.
• Threats to their survival are mainly of an
  environmental nature such as massive oil spills
  and accumulative toxins in their food supply.

Bio

• My home town is Okemos Michigan, I have lived
  there most of my life. I also have a house on
  Lake Charlevoix where I love to spend time during
  the summers.
• I have two parents John and Diane and one brother
  (Tony) who is 25 years old.
• I played soccer from when I was 5 years old until
  I came to college. I also danced from when I was
  3 until when I was in eighth grade.
• I am in my fifth year at Western Michigan and I
  plan to graduate in December 2005 with a degree
  in elementary education.
