Title: The Red Planet

1
The Red Planet
  • Judy Kiel

2
Introduction
  • The Earth is just one planet in our solar system.
Have you ever wondered about the other planets?
Mars is the planet that is closest to our Earth.

3
Thesis Statement
  • In this PowerPoint, I will discuss the geography,
weather, and possibility alien life on the planet
    Mars.

4
The Geography of Mars
  • Mars has a similar geography to Earth.
  • There are mountains and volcanoes.
  • The surface of Mars is much more rocky as
    compared to Earth.

5
The Geography of Mars
  • Mars is, indeed, a very rocky planet and is
roughly half the size of Earth.
  • Olympus Mons is located on Mars and is the
largest volcano in the solar system.
  • Mars also possesses many sand-covered deserts.
  • (Read and Lewis pp.4-5)

6
The Geography of Mars
  • Mars also has arctic ice fields, typically near
    the North Pole.
  • There are also flat plains on Mars as well.
  • (marsnews.com)

7
Weather on Mars
  • Dust storms are very common on Mars.
  • They can last anywhere from hours, to days, to
    months.

8
Weather on Mars
  • Mars has occasional clouds.
  • The most common type of storm is the dust storm.
  • These dust storms will pull up large amounts of
the red sand on the surface and make it
    impossible to see.

9
Weather on Mars
  • Mars also has reflective clouds.
  • There can also be very, very strong winds on
    Mars.
  • Some winds may reach over a category five
    hurricane force.

10
Alien Life on Mars
  • There is always speculation of alien life on Mars.

11
Alien Life on Mars
  • Human life as we know it could not exist on Mars
because the air is simply not breathable.
  • There is no evidence that suggests sophisticated
    life does exist on Mars.

12
Alien Life on Mars
  • There has been evidence that other organisms do
    exist on Mars.
  • Bacteria-like organisms were discovered on rocks
from Mars, but these may have been formed by the
    process of preparing the sample.
  • (Boyce, p.265)

13
Summary
  • Mars is a planet with many of the same geological
    features of Earth.
  • Sandstorms are very common on Mars and these can
    be very strong.
  • Alien life could exist on Mars in the form of
    bacteria-like organisms.

14
Final Thought
  • Mars is a very complex and interesting planet to
learn about. With advancement in technology,
maybe we could discover alien life on Mars. It
    is fascinating to think about!
