Title: Klondike Elementary School Design Review

1
Klondike Elementary School Design Review
  • Team Leader Michael T. Cyb8/1/2009

2
Team Objectives
  • Mission The mission of EPICS-KES is to work
with the teachers and students of Klondike
Elementary School to produce, in a timely manner,
meaningful projects that relate to the Indiana
State Educational Standards and help elementary
students understand the concepts that are being
    taught in the classroom

3
Agenda
  • Magic Piano
  • Indiana History
  • Rube Goldberg Machine
  • USA States Project

4
Magic Piano
  • Albert Kim, Ken Little

5
Semester Progress
  • Finished fiberglass contours
  • Primer and first coat applied to piano case

6
Status
  • Case is ready for final coat and drying
  • Music holder will be put into place after drying
    process
  • Paperwork is started for delivery

7
Future Plans
  • Deliver project in the following week
  • Stay in touch with KES to adapt project if needed
  • Create software package for song conversion

8
Indiana History Game Board

  • Ryan Breed Team Leader
  • Matt Hockemeyer
  • Paul Kim

9
Semester Progress
  • Updated Timeline
  • To be delivered early next semester
  • Assembly and testing
  • Updated CATIA Design
  • Dimensions adjusted
  • Construction of electrical components
  • Construction of final game board

10
CATIA Design
  • 20.75 x 30.75
  • Rounded edges
  • 3/8 material
  • LCD Display
  • 6 buttons
  • Teams, advance, next question

11
Goals by the end of the Semester
  • Have all construction completed
  • Electrical and woodwork
  • Be ready for transition to assembly
  • Finish BASIC Stamp programming
  • Complete documentation for next semester

13
Components
  • Rube Goldberg machine
  • 10-20 steps to conduct a simple task in the most
    complex way possible
  • Utilizes several forms of energy (potential,
    kinetic, light, etc.)
  • Educates children on importance of simple
    machines in everyday life
  • Have children troubleshoot problems with the
machine on their own (with guidance from the
    teacher)
  • Simple machine workbook
  • Reinforce principles covered with Rube Goldberg
    machine
  • Teachers may use it to test understanding of
    material
  • Helpful for describing what the function of a
    step is

14
Indianas Academic Standards and Resources
  • The Physical SettingThis standard focuses on
three principle subjects the structure of the
universe, the major processes that have shaped
the planet Earth, and the concepts with which
science describes the physical world in general -
organized under the headings of Matter and Energy
    and Forces of Nature.

15
Semester Progress
  • Created Project Charter
  • Rube Goldberg Machine Project Charter
  • Step List Created
  • Two parallel paths envisioned
  • Students will need to manually power many steps
    in final machine design
  • Rube Goldberg Machine Step List
  • Timeline
  • Rube_Goldberg_Timeline

16
Semester Goals
  • Create drawing of machine in CAD software (Catia)
  • Determine suppliers for parts
  • Build frame
  • Transfer of Project Leader authority next semester

17
USA Project
  • TEAM MEMBERS
  • Andrew Bartus
  • Roberto Colon
  • Albert Kim
  • Paul Kim

18
Motivation
  • This project was inspired by the thought that
many students in elementary school have a hard
time learning geographic information about the
United States by studying traditional maps our
intent is to provide an educational resource to
children so that they may learn about the
geography of the United States in a fun way.

19
Goals of USA project
  • An interactive map of the United States with
illuminated states and capitals that will help
the children learn about the geography of the
    United States
  • USA project mounted in wall frame to hang on the
    wall for easy presentation
  • Utilize different colors to help children
visually identify each state through the color
    difference

20
Semester Progress
  • Game detail design
  • Game procedure and instruction
  • Auto CAD design for USA project game board
  • Timeline
  • USA Project timeline

21
Semester Goals
  • Design basic electric circuit design
  • Button activated LED circuits
  • Seven-segment score board circuit design
  • Transfer project leader authority to next
    semester
  • Start building game board frame

22
AutoCAD design
23
Creative Problem Solving Workshops
  • Egg Drop
  • Paper Tower
  • Paper Airplane

24
Standard The Nature of Science and Technology
  • Students will work collaboratively to carry
    out investigations
  • They will observe and make accurate measurements,
increase their use of tools and instruments,
record data in journals, and communicate their
results through visual, written, and verbal forms
    of communication
  • Students will then be able to repeat their
    investigations, explain inconsistencies in their
results, and design projects based upon their
    experiments
