Adverbs Defined
  • Adverbs are words that modify a verb, an
    adjective, or another adverb.
  • They often tell where, when, why, or under what
    conditions something happens or happened.
  • Adverbs usually end in ly, however, many words
and phrases not ending in ly serve an adverbial
function and an ly ending is not a guarantee
that it is an adverb. The words lonely, lovely,
    motherly, friendly, and neighborly are
    adjectives.

3
Adverb Clause
  • If a group of words containing a subject and verb
acts as an adverb (modifying the verb of the
sentence), it is called an adverb clause.
  • Example subject
  • When school is over, they are coming to my
    house. verb

Adverbial Phrase
  • When a group of words not containing a subject or
verb acts as an adverb, its called an adverbial
    phrase. Prepositional phrases frequently have
adverbial functions (telling place and time,
    modifying the verb).
  • Examples
  • She went to the movies.
  • He works on holidays.
  • They lived in Canada during the war.
