Title: Steroids

1
Steroids
  • The desire for an edge

2
Who Uses Steroids?
  • Athletes involved in sports that rely on their
strength and size, like football, wrestling, or
    baseball.
  • Endurance athletes, like those involved in
    track-and-field and swimming.
  • Athletes involved in weight training or
    bodybuilding.
  • Anyone interested in building and defining
    muscle.

3
What are the side effects of steroids?
  • High blood pressure and heart disease
  • Liver damage and cancers
  • Stroke and blood clots
  • Urinary and bowel problems, such as diarrhea
  • Headaches, aching joints, and muscle cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sleep problems
  • Increased risk of ligament and tendon injuries
  • Severe acne, especially on face and back
  • Baldness

4
Will steroids make me a better athlete?
  • No. Steroids can not improve an athlete's agility
or skill. Lots of things help determine athletic
ability, including genetics, body size, age, sex,
diet, and how hard the athlete trains. It is
clear that the medical dangers of steroid use far
outweigh the advantage of gains in strength or
    muscle mass.

5
How are steroids used?
  • Steroids can be taken in the two different ways
  • Pills
  • Injected with a needle (Athletes who share
needles to inject steroids also are at risk for
serious infections including Hepatitis B and HIV.)

6
The Pressure to Take Steroids
  • High School students everyday, are being
    pressured into taking steroids.
  • High Schools do random drug tests to try to stop
    athletes from taking drugs.
  • But the test are done by the coaches, who never
pick the kids most important to their team.

7
The Alternative To Steroids.
  • Train regularly, without using drugs.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Set realistic goals and be happy when you reach
    them.
  • Seek out training, coaching, and advice from a
    reliable professional.
  • Talk to your doctor about nutrition, your health,
preventing injury, and safe ways to gain
    strength.
