• Definitions
• Remote determination of boundaries using imagery
• Satellite IKONOS
• Aerial photography- rectified/ unrectified/
  ortho-photo OR creation of topographic maps
• Examples of Usage
• UK system
• Iran
• Australia considering? NO
• Greece? NO, YES,?
• Thailand (Out of 10 ? 10!)
• Kenya - used trees, isolated surveys followed by
  fly over

Ground methods key benefits

• Historical records- field notes provide a very
  rich description of past land use
• Precise
• Cheaper?? It depends for SPORADIC surveys
• Dialogue with owners and the people- understand
  whats happening on the ground
• See the monuments, reference marks
• Ground survey can exist alone i.e. no
  requirement for photogrammetric

Photo methods key benefits

• Very good coverage
• Cheaper- if SYSTEMATIC adjudication
• Better for corruption? Yes can see what is
  there e.g. Ghana project
• Not available to all- e.g. Fiji required physical
  representation of areas. Capacity issues.
• Accuracy can be as good as ground methods under
  good conditions
• Gain access to remote areas otherwise unavailable
• Multiple uses for the imagery- enviro issues,
  planning, utilities

Ground methods limitations

• Tends to focus on creating parcels rather than
  producing holistic map
• Poor in inaccessible areas i.e. terrain and
  visibility

Photo methods limitations

• Photogrammetric REQUIRES ground survey component
• Require updates for imagery
• Governments may lock it up
• Limited used in areas covered with vegetation and
  forests
