Grade-Specific Expectations
  • Responsibility
  • Organization
  • Note-taking vs. study guides
  • Attendance is important. Be careful with absences
    and early dismissals please.
  • Fast-paced importance of staying on top of the
    curriculum and skills
  • Ultimate goal is to have the students ready for
    sixth grade and to be life-long learners
  • 5th graders are held responsible for everything
    they have learned from 3rd and 4th grade in all
    testing.

Curriculum Information
  • Math
  • The students must know their multiplication and
    division facts. Please review these frequently
    with your child.
  • Skills such as multiplication, division,
    decimals, fractions, geometry, measurement, data
    and probability
  • End of nine weeks test will count 5 of final
    grade each nine weeks
  • Proficiency test in Spring to help determine
    placement for sixth grade

Science
  • One major unit test per nine weeks plus
    additional daily grades/quizzes
  • Inquiry skills are emphasized and tested every
    nine weeks.
  • Be familiar with these terms
  • Quantitative vs. Qualitative
  • Inference vs. Prediction
  • Controlled, independent, and dependent variables
  • Science project is mandatory! Informational
    meeting is on Oct. 4th at 6 p.m.
  • Some students will take Science or Social Studies
    PACT test

Social Studies
  • At least 2 units of study and tests for each nine
    weeks
  • Guest speakers are always welcome.
  • Historical fiction books are available for
    students to read related to our social studies
    curriculum.
  • Interactive learning opportunities
  • Immigration Day (2nd 9 weeks)
  • Shanty Town Day (4th 9 weeks)
  • Volunteers are needed for those days If you are
    interested, please let your childs teacher know.

Reading
  • Includes Shared, Independent and Guided Reading
  • Novels for each nine weeks
  • Culminating Assessments and Novel Tests
  • Independent Reading Logs
  • Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) - levels
    are being assessed
  • Project Challenge grades (30)

Writing
  • State Writing Rubric same as 3rd and 4th grade
  • Narratives, Expository, and Descriptive writings
  • Grammar standards are much more specific in our
    curriculum this year (past participles,
    interjections, irregular adverbs, etc.)
  • Project Challenge grades (20)
  • Exemplary Writing Award students will be asked
    about writing process
  • Student conferences with teacher

  • Fifth grade PTA performance and dinner on Nov. 15
