BACKGROUND
  • Arm of Ministry of Trade Industry
  • Started operations on 8th July,1974
  • Operations governed by
  • Standards Act
  • Metrology Act

MANDATE
  • Promote development and use of standards to
  • ensure acceptable quality in goods/services
    produced or used in Trinidad and Tobago
  • improve efficiency and competitiveness of the
    industrial sector.
  • safeguard consumer/worker health and safety.
  • protect the environment.

EXCEPTIONS
  • Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS)
    does not develop standards for food, drugs and
    cosmetics.
  • This is the responsibility of the Chemistry Food
    and Drugs Division of the Ministry of Health.

ROLES OF TTBS CAD IN CONSUMER COMPLAINTS
HANDLING
  • Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards handles
    consumer complaints about goods/services that do
    not conform to National Compulsory Standards
    and/or endanger public health, safety and the
    environment.
  • CONSUMER AFFAIRS DIVISION (CAD)
  • Handles consumer complaints concerning the
    performance of goods for redress such as refunds,
    exchanges, warranties, repairs. Etc.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TTBS AND CAD
  • Consumers Affairs Division (CAD) requests testing
    services from Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of
    Standards (TTBS) for products about which
    consumers lodge complaints.
  • TTBS conducts tests on products submitted and
    forwards test reports to CAD.
  • TTBS and CAD collaborate in other areas to
    promote consumer protection such as joint testing
    programmes, public educational programmes, issue
    joint public statement , etc.

materials, products, processes and services are
fit for their intended purposes.
