inthe K-12 science, mathematics, and technology
(SMT) programs.STEP.com has emphasized
technology integration and training and
supporting mathematics and science teachers
4COMPONENTS OF STEP.com
5 STEP.com Resource Teachers have provided the
following resources for math and science

greater emphasis placed on support of NEW

in the schools receiving assistance was 8.4. - The average gain in fifth grade science scores
in the schools receiving assistance was 21.1.
8The program sponsored informational sessions for
parents Family Night at Crittenden Middle
School
9Reservoir Middle School also had an excellent

20Math and science teacher participation in
professional development activities has more than
tripled. New teachers averaged 172 hours of
professional development last year.As a result,
new math and science teacher retention rates have
increased in those teachers receiving support
from resource teachers in their first year of
teaching.
21The STEP.com Program has been supported by an
Advisory Board of members from the community,
including local museums, businesses, and
universities. They have provided numerous
teacher and student opportunities at their
facilities. With their help, the program was
able to recruit student teachers by offering a
special stipend. This program resulted in
permanent positions for most of the students.
22The goal of NSF in presenting the award that
funded STEP.com was that the district would
create a premier K-12 learning environment, done
in a way that would be scalable and sustainable,
that would lead to a full-scale implementation of
a SMT program for all students. Positive
Results100 of the middle and high schools and
93 of the elementary schoolsachieved full
accreditation in math and science last
year(2003-2004)
23Looking Ahead
