Curriculum Mapping of the PSSA Assessment Anchors
  • Intermediate Unit 1
  • Instructional Support Services

2
What is curriculum mapping?
  • Curriculum mapping, in a general sense, is a
process that involves a description of the
content and skills taught at each grade level or
    subject area of the curriculum.
  • More specifically, it is a calendar-based
description or database of the taught curriculum
(content and skills) in a district.
  • More simplified, mapping is what we actually
teach and when we teach it.

3
What is the process for mapping the PSSA
Assessment Anchors?
  • Become knowledgeable of the grade level PSSA
Assessment Anchors, Eligible Content, and Example
    Items in Reading and/or Mathematics.

4
What is the process for mapping the PSSA
Assessment Anchors?
  • Determine whether your districts curriculum
currently addresses the PSSA Assessment Anchors.

5
What is the process for mapping the PSSA
Assessment Anchors?
  • Determine if any PSSA Assessment Anchors are
orphaned or not given instructional treatment in
    your existing curriculum.

6
What is the process for mapping the PSSA
Assessment Anchors?
  • The PSSA Assessment Anchors develop continuity
    and cumulative progression over time
    (3-4-5-6-7-8-11)
  • The Anchors are spiraled to build on what has
    occurred before - vertical articulation.

7
What is the process for mapping the PSSA
Assessment Anchors?
  • Your goal is to develop a map of PSSA Assessment
Anchors and Eligible Content/Skills for each
grade level subject area (Reading and Math) that
teachers must work on with students throughout
the course of the calendar school year. Time
focus is September through mid March - PSSA
    Testing.

8
Some considerations for you to think about in
mapping the Anchors.
  • Placement and treatment of skills and content in
currently used district reading and math
    curricula, programs, texts, and basals.
  • The breadth and depth of instructional
opportunities given to skills and content.
  • Flexibility in the scope and sequence of existing
    math and reading curricula.
  • Consensus of agreement for responsibility in
ensuring all Assessment Anchors are addressed
within the time framework at all grade levels.

9
  • Now, How Do We Do It?

Mapping the PSSA Assessment Anchors, that is.
10
The Process.
  • 1. Carefully examine and analyze the PSSA
Assessment Anchors for Reading and/or Mathematics
    at your designated grade level.

11
The Process.
  • 2. Highlight all of the PSSA Assessment Anchors
currently addressed or covered in your grade
    level/subject area curriculum.

12
The Process.
  • 3. Flag any PSSA Assessment Anchors not treated
or taught in your current district math or
    reading curriculum.

13
The Process.
  • 4. Map each PSSA Assessment Anchor into the
September-March timeframe when it should be
taught and most easily adapts to your current
    curriculum, textbook, or basal program.

14
The Process.
  • 5. Integrate the missing or orphaned PSSA
Assessment Anchors you identified as not treated
in your current curriculum into the map.
  • Star these on your PSSA Anchor Map so
future curriculum revisions can be done in your
    district.

15
The Process.
  • 6. Examine the Eligible Content and indicate the
minimum depth of the content required at your
    grade level.

16
The Process.
  • 7. Indicate the Prior Skills Needed for the
development of each Anchor at your grade level.
Your professional experience and judgment are
critical here to ensure student success.

17
The Process.
  • 8. Analyze your final map to ensure all PSSA
Assessment Anchors have been incorporated in a
workable scope and sequence that is manageable
with your grade-level curriculum and resources.

18
The Process.
  • 9. Examine and analyze the progression of the
Assessment Anchors through all grades to ensure a
logical and developmental incorporation into your
    district curriculum.
