2What is it?
The Stock Market Game (SMG) is a proven tool
for schools to improve the learning experience in
the classroom
3- Did you know?
- Students entering college are offered an
average of eight - credit cards the first week of school
- University administrators state they lose more
students - to credit card debt than to academic failure
- College students borrowed in the 90s what they
- borrowed in the 60s, 70s, and 80s combined
4Did you know?
- Approximately 40,000,000 Americans, the
unbanked are not using mainstream, insured
financial institutions - 48 of credit card owners only pay their minimum
monthly payment each month - One in four women currently retires on an income
below the poverty level
5SMG Basics
-Teams of three to five students invest a virtual
100,000 in common stocks and mutual funds listed
on NYSE, AMEX, or Nasdaq -SMG stock prices are
based on real world prices
6SMG Basics
-True portfolio trading system -A 2 brokers
fee charged for each transaction (hidden math
problem!) -Interest paid on cash balances
(another hidden math problem!) -End of day/real
time pricing
7- Can I Do This?
- Do I need to be a financial whiz?
- How much time does it take?
- How does it fit into my curriculum?
8Most importantly,
The Stock Market Game Program instills an
understanding of the need to save and invest at
an early age.
9Why Does The Stock Market Game Work?
- Engagement in school includes behaviors (
persistence, effort, attention) and emotions (
enthusiasm, interest, pride in success) - Emphasis on high order thinking requires students
to engage with new concepts, pushed to understand
or explore alternative strategies or solutions - Active participation requires students to engage
in real world tasks and projects rather than
remain passive learners projects - Engaging Schools, Fostering High School
Students Motivation to Learn - National Research Council, Institute of Medicine,
2004
