Title: It was a dark and stormy night'

1
It was a dark and stormy night.
  • A dog out for an evening walk pulls his owner
towards a storm drain in their parking lot.
  • Drawing nearer, she hears a cat crying at the
same time she notices a little furry head
sticking out of the metal grate!

2
Im stuck!
  • The kitty was soaking wet, muddy, shivering and
mewing loudly. The cat had tried to climb out of
the drain and became wedged in between the bars,
and was now precariously balanced on a ledge
inside of the drain with his head outside. The
dogwalker and her friends called the Capital Area
    Humane Society for assistance.

3
To the rescue
  • Chief Humane Agent Kerry Manion responded, along
with technicians Valerie Williams and Dodie
Shapiro. The investigators lifted the heavy
metal grate out of the opening, kitty and all.

4
Poor kitty!
  • Agents wrapped the shivering, distressed kitty in
a blanket and began the task of trying to get him
disengaged. The cat had tried and tried and had
only succeeded in getting himself more firmly
    stuck.

5
A little to the left, a little to the right..
  • As they held the grate upright, Williams held the
cats body while Manion carefully turned the head
and extricated the kitty. Officer Manion said it
was similar to moving a couch through a
doorframe, finding the one angle that would allow
    for the greatest maneuverability.

6
What should we name him?
  • The agents named the kitty Curious Jorge for
getting himself in such a predicament.

7
Safe but still in danger.
  • The bedraggled cat was rushed to Capital
    Emergency Veterinary Services for immediate
medical attention. His body temperature was so
low that it didnt register on the thermometer,
at less than 92 degrees (normal feline
    temperature is 101 degrees Fahrenheit).

8
Warm and dry at last
  • The medical team dried and warmed Jorge, placing
him on a heated water mattress and creating a
warm tent of towels, forcing warm air into the
    tent with a hose.

9
Miraculously.
  • Other than hypothermia, his only visible injuries
were broken blood vessels in his eyes, a result
of tugging and straining to pull himself free.

10
You wouldnt believe the night I had..
  • After his night in the hospital, Curious came to
the Capital Area Humane Society to recover and
    regain his strength.
  • Warm and safe, Jorge is held by Valerie Williams,
one of the technicians who rescued him.

11
born to be wild.
  • It seems Curious Jorge was no stranger to the
outdoors. He was a feral cat, accustomed to
living in the wild, and although grateful, was
not easy to handle and not a candidate to be a
family pet. He was vaccinated, neutered, and
entrusted to a feral cat colony caretaker to
    resume life in the wild.

12
  • Curious Jorge owes his life (were not sure which
number he is on) to the dog who led his mom to
discover him, the good Samaritans who called the
Capital Area Humane Society (and continued to
call every day to check on his progress), Capital
Emergency Veterinary Services, his new caretaker,
and the entire team at the Capital Area Humane
    Society.

    Capital Animal Humane Society Cruelty
Investigations hotline at (614)777-7387 ext. 250.
