Standard Precautions
(universal Precautions)
  • Standard Precautions means that safety measures
    are to be used in every circumstance.
  • Correct and appropriate use creates a barrier.
  • PPE to be worn by all HCW when there is a risk of
    contamination with blood, body fluids, secretions
    or excretions.

Risk Assessment
  • Selection of PPE is based on a risk assessment.
  • Look at the task, assess the risk and decide what
    equipment is needed identification hazard
  • Take into consideration the site of hazard.
  • Ensure you are working as safely as you can.

GlovesSterile and non sterile.
  • Sterile to protect patients e.g. invasive
    procedures. Catheterisation, sterile dressings
  • Non sterile used to protect staff e.g. dirty
    laundry, clinical waste, personal care to
    patients.
  • Robust Gloves for cleaning and when using
    Cleaning products, puncture resistant gloves for
    collecting glass, tins , sharps spillages.

Aprons
  • For patients care activities, likely to generate
    splashes or sprays of blood, body secretions and
    or excretions.
  • For protecting skin and preventing the soiling of
    clothing during procedures.
  • Coveralls are available if needed
  • e.g. dirty protests

Masks, Eye Protection Face Shields
  • For protecting the mucous membrane of the eyes,
    nose and mouth during procedures.
  • For patient-care activities likely to generate
    splashes or sprays of blood, blood fluids,
    secretions, excretions.
  • Masks maybe used when in close contact with a
    patient infected with open and active TB or
    possible patients infected with pandemic flu.

Removal of PPE
  • Risk Assess
  • Gloves
  • Apron
  • Mask
  • Goggles
  • Dispose all PPE into clinical waste.
  • DECONTAMINATE HANDS !!!
