Title: Chumash Culture

1
Chumash Culture
2
  • Im not going to bore you with this stuff.

3
Chumash Culture
  • The Chumash were a culture that lived in
the Channel Islands off the coast of California.
The Channel Islands are located toward the middle
of the state off the west coast.

4
Chumash Jewelry
  • The Chumash must have had a lot of extra time
on their hands because they made jewelry. They
crafted it out of shells and bones. There are
still some jewelry pieces left in museums after
    years of wear and tear.

5
Chumash Jobs
  • The Chumash had very interesting jobs. Some of
the men were hunters and got food. Others were
astronomers and studied the stars. Some were
medicine men and believed they could talk to the
gods. Others studied the wind the trees and the
animals. Last but not least the women stayed
home and watched the children and made food.

6
Chumash pets
  • The Chumash had pets to keep them company.
They usually trapped island foxes and then tamed
them and kept them as pets. Tamed foxes to the
Chumash were like pet dogs are to us today.

7
Chumash Transportation
  • The Chumash would go out in tomtals canoes
and kill sharks and use their skin to sand drift
wood to make more canoes. Then they would travel
    to other islands to barter.

8
Chumash Language
  • The Chumash spoke Hokan and would
  • communicate with each other. The Hokan
  • language was not used by many other people.

9
To Sum It All Up
  • I liked doing this report. I think it would be
hard to live like a Chumash for the rest of my
life. It would be hard to work all day long just
hunting for your food. Also, if I were a
Chumash, some of the things I would miss about
today would be lots of different choices of food,
playing with Legos, and working and playing on
    the computer.

10
In Conclusion
  • I hope you enjoyed me sharing what I
  • know about the Chumash. I hope you learned
  • just as much as I did!
