has grown into an organization of over 1,055
stores from coast to coast, becoming an indelible
part of the lives of Canadians, young and old.

32
  • September 15, 1922The Beginning There are only
23,700 cars in Canada in 1913, but by 1922, the
number jumps to 210,333 in Ontario alone. That
year, two brothers, John W. and Alfred J. Billes,
with a combined savings of 1,800, buy Hamilton
Tire and Garage Ltd. in Toronto's east end. The
brothers stock a small range of repair parts for
the two most popular car makes, tires, batteries,
    and a home-made brand of anti-freezeat a time
when Toronto's 40,000 cars are being accepted as
transportation. A big part of their early
earnings come from renting out parking spaces in
their heated garagea necessity in those days if
a car was to start on a cold morning.

33
  • Today, nine out of ten adult Canadians shop at
Canadian Tire at least twice a year and 40 of
Canadians shop at Canadian Tire every week.
Eighty-five per cent of the Canadian population
lives within a 15-minute drive of their local
Canadian Tire store. Canadian Tire is three
    clearly defined, highly competitive, specialty
stores under one roofautomotive, sports and
leisure, and home products. The involvement of
Canadian Tire Associate Dealers in the daily life
of the communities they serve helps the retailer
forge stronger links with its customers across
Canada. The most extensive store renewal and
redevelopment program in Canadian history is
underway to ensure Canadian Tire continues to be
the best at what customers value most.

The year was 1945 the soldiers were coming home,
Zoot Suits were in style and Bing Crosby and
Frank Sinatra crooned over the radio waves. In
this new era of hope and expectation, London
Drugs was born. It was a humble, community
drugstore-just 1000 square feet-but this little
store on Main Street, Vancouver, was given a big
name. The store was named after London, England,
the home of Canada's King, George VI.
39
  • Today, London Drugs has stores in more than 35
    major markets throughout British Columbia,
    Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.  The
pharmacy is still the heart of our business, but
today we also offer a full service computer
department, cosmetics ranging from lipgloss to
high-end face creams, furniture, cameras, high
quality photo finishing, cordless phones and
plasma televisions. More people buy their small
appliances in London Drugs than any other place
in Western Canada. All told, we serve over 45
million customers each year, and we are still
    growing.

40
In May, 1670 the King of England granted the
lands of the Hudson Bay watershed to "the
Governor and Company of Adventurers of England
trading into Hudson Bay." In 1970, coincident
with its 300th anniversary, Hbc became a Canadian
corporation.
41
  • The 21st century finds Hbc well into its fourth
century of retailing in Canada. Its major retail
channels the Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters, and
Fields together provide more than two-thirds of
the retail needs of Canadians. Proof positive, if
any were needed, of the aptness of Hbc's proud
    claim

  • In 1982, the first WINNERS store was opened in
Toronto, Ontario, and for the first time in
Canada, consumers were offered the winning
combination of the latest brand name and designer
women's and children's fashions for up to 60
less. And with new items arriving fresh daily,
style savvy shoppers got to experience the
"Thrill of the Find". In 1990 Winners was
acquired by THE TJX COMPANIES INC.,

1919 - Theodore Pringle Loblaw and J. Milton Cork
open the first Loblaw Groceterias in Toronto.
They have a new concept in grocery retailing,
combining self-serve and cash-and-carry. No
longer will customers have to wait for a clerk to
fetch items from behind store counters. Loblaw
and Cork are told it will never work.
47
Progress!
  • 1949 - Loblaws again leads the way with the
    introduction of "healthfully-cool equipped
air-conditioning," in its new "super markets."
Other innovations include "magic carpet" doors
that open automatically before shoppers. The
post-war boom of the 1950s sees store sizes
steadily expand, with larger and larger parking
lots to accommodate an increasingly suburban
    class of consumers.

48
Green before it was cool
  • 1989 - Because "Something Can Be Done!"
President's Choice Green Products are launched by
Loblaws. More than 100 'environmentally friendly'
and 'body friendly' items are featured, including
"100 Natural Source Lawn Garden Fertilizer"
and "Just Peanuts Old Fashioned Peanut Butter."

49
  • Today - Today's pace never seems to slow. With
its "market" stores, Loblaws is making shopping
more convenient, while still doing what it's
always done best offering great quality food,
and innovative products, at a terrific price.
One-stop convenience means Loblaws customers can
pick-up dinner at the Meals To Go counter, buy a
bottle of wine, order digital prints from the
Photolab, do their banking at a PC Financial
pavillion, get that prescription filled at the
DRUGStore Pharmacy, even enroll for cooking
classes "Upstairs at Loblaws," all while
    checking-off their grocery list.
