Purpose
  • The purpose of this presentation is to provide an
    overview of the information that drives all of
    the activities associated with teacher education
    at Benedict College.

Vision
  • The vision of the unit mirrors the vision of the
    institution. The teacher education program at
    Benedict College is committed to producing the
    best educators in the Carolinas. The teacher
    education program seeks students, faculty, staff
    and administrators who are committed to creating
    a better world through the discovery and
    application of knowledge. The teacher education
    program offers high quality programs of teaching,
    research, and public service for students and
    faculty. The Benedict College teacher education
    program is committed to facilitating and
    empowering teachers to meet the needs of all
    students and diverse communities in a global
    society.

Mission
  • The mission of the teacher education program is
    to prepare teachers for P-12 instruction and for
    further study in education related fields.
    Students completing programs of study in teacher
    education will be prepared to acquire and
    maintain instructional and leadership positions
    in the education arena related to teaching,
    service, and research. The teacher education
    program prepares certified and qualified
    teachers.

Conceptual Framework
  • The conceptual framework consists of four
    outcomes (1) teachers as scholars (2) teachers
    as effective practitioners (3) teachers as
    reflective decision makers and (4) teachers as
    resources for the community. These four
    dimensions guide every aspect of the Teacher
    Education program at Benedict College and add
    coherence to the learning experiences and
    outcomes for teacher candidates. In addition to
    these four outcomes there are 29 proficiencies
    (BCTE standards).

  • Field Experiences are diverse and support the
    BCTE standards
  • Diversity- candidates work with diverse faculty
    at the college as well as in the school.
    Diversity-related issues are taught throughout
    the curriculum.
  • Faculty faculty are qualified, model best
    teaching and service practices as delineated by
    the conceptual framework.
  • Unit Governance unit governance structures and
    resources support the work of the unit.
