No Me in Mia

• Mias real name is Mariel Margaret Hamm.
• To get better, Mia plays soccer against bigger,
  better, and tougher people.
• After playing her brother for several years, she
  found herself playing for the best college team
  in America (playing w/ her brother obviously
  worked).
• Mia strongly believes in the saying practice
  makes perfect.

Love the Game

• To be a great soccer player you must love the
  game.
• You must love everything about soccer drills,
  practice, equipment, etc.
• Love the passion it creates among those who play
  and watch worldwide.
• As you get older you get better and advance up
  the ladder of soccer success.

Love the Ball

• Must have the ability to control the ball under
  pressure.
• Control the ball with your feet as if you were
  using your hands.
• Be able to control the ball with your chest,
  feet, thigh, and head.

The Mental Game

• The most important thing to soccer is mental
  toughness, and the will to prepare to win.
• Nothing can beat the combination of mental and
  physical toughness.

The Physical Game

• Anyone who says soccer is not a physical game has
  never watched or played soccer up close.
• The difference between who wins and who loses is
  determined by the team that sacrifices there
  bodies more. Meaning heads clash together, bodies
  go flying, and cleats shred ankles, shins, and
  knees.

Extra Facts

• Mias brother died in 1997 of a bone marrow
  transplant.
• Mia always walks out onto the field between
  Shannon MacMillian, 8, and Michelle Akers, 10.
• At UNC Mias coach, Anson Dorrance became her
  legal guardian, while my parents were enjoying
  their new house in Italy.

More Extra Facts

• When I was young I always played on a boys soccer
  team. It was that or no soccer. Of course I
  choose to play on the boys team.
• While I continued to play on the USA team we went
  ahead and won the 1995 Womens World Cup and the
  1996 Olympics.
