The Inventor
  • George Crum, the person credited for inventing
the potato chip, was a Native American/African
American chef. He worked at the Moon Lake Lodge
resort in Saratoga Springs, New York. Crum did
not actually invent potato chips on purpose it
was an accident. After George invented paper
thin fried potatoes, now called potato chips, he
opened his own restaurant. In his time, potatoes
had to be peeled and sliced by hand this took a
lot of time. Many people describe George as being
ornery and arrogant. In 1860, Crum bought a
building to set up a catering business in and
soon started to work for rich and famous clients
like William Vanderbilt and Henry Hilton.
Although he was not humble, George Crum never
officially took credit for creating the first
potato chips. He later died in 1914 at the old
    age of 92.

How Potato Chips Were Invented
  • Local legend says George Crum was working at the
Moon Lake Lodge restaurant one day, and an
annoying customer sent back his/her order of
french fried potatoes. The customer complained
that the fries were too thick. George made a
thinner batch and sent the new fries to the
customer, yet the customer was still unhappy.
Crum cut the potato slices so thin that it could
not be eaten with a fork. He fried the potatoes,
added salt and sent them back to the customer a
third and final time. Much to Georges surprize,
the customer loved the dish, and more people
started to ask for his fried potatoes. The
identity or gender of the customer is unknown.
Crum originally named his potato chips Saratoga
Chips and potato crunches. The chips were
packaged and sold all over the New England area
of the United States. Later a man named William
Tappendon manufactured and marketed Crums chips
    in Cleveland, Ohio in 1895.

All American Snack
  • In the 1900s, potato chips were mostly a northern
dish, but a man named Herman Lay helped change
this. When he was only 11 years old, he started
selling products door to door. Later in his life,
Lay sold bags of potato chips out of the trunk of
his car in the south. His brand became the first
successful national brand. In 1961 Lays company
merged with Frito, a company that produced other
snacks like Frito Corn Chips. Potato chips soon
became a widely consumed snack all across the
country. Throughout his life, Herman held many
different jobs. Herman Lay died in 1982 he was
inducted into the business hall of fame in 2002.
