independence by enhancing their confidence in
their own abilities. - The ILE requirement is fulfilled by a completion
of a single project of at least three credits in
a single semester or summer in one of these
categories (a) an independent research project
or a creative project (including but not limited
to honors) (b) an internship (c) approved study
abroad programs (d) student teaching or (e) a
project in the Summer Fellows Program or a
comparable summer research program.
26Internship Benefits

- Develop self-understanding, self-discipline, and
confidence. - Cultivate networking/mentoring relationships.
- Develop career-related and transferable skills.
- Investigate organizational culture.
- Bridge the gap between collegiate life and full

31- This experience gave me a significant amount of
practical training and experience that will be
useful to me in the future. The experience also
was beneficial in helping me network with
professionals in the psychology and mental health
field, and I was even offered a full time job
with the organization after I graduate! - Stephanie Perkins (04) Resident Assistant,
Penndel Mental Health Center -Langhorne, PA -
- I gained firsthand insight into the world of
journalism and entertainment, including observing
control room staffers and receiving advice from
hosts Charlie Gibson and Diane Sawyer during
breaks and weekly brownbag lunch meetings. As a
side perk, I also enjoyed meeting many of the
guests who stop by the set. - Peter Elek (04) Production Assistant, Good
Morning America- New York, New York - "I met contacts, learned about potential
employers, and explored career ideas. I
developed my writing skills, particularly grant
writing skills, and my sense of professionalism.
Through this experience I have friends and
mentors who are willing to advise me, write
recommendations, and even hire me after I
graduate. - Sarah Kauffman (05), Cultural Policy
Intern - Center for Arts Culture- Washington,
DC
32- I gained insight into many different
professions that deal with the protection and
management of endangered species which is an area
I wish to pursue. My daily tours and
presentations to the public helped me to develop
my public speaking skills. - Emily Durkin (04) The Karen Beasley Sea
Turtle Resuce Rehabilitation Topsail, NC -
- "I learned a lot about what I do and dont
like to do, and based on this knowledge was able
to narrow my career options. I plan to focus on
foreign affairs. I am specifically interested in
working for a law enforcement agency and the
foreign service. My international relations
foreign language courses and my involvement in
the Model United Nations organization prepared me
to live and work in the heart of the European
Union." - Michelle Fontaine (04), Assistant

51Student comments about Study Abroad
I have become very independent. I love the
city, taking public transportation, seeing new
sites. Studying abroad has encouraged me to get
to know Philadelphia better and not just
Philadelphia but my home, the US. I was
embarrassed about how little I knew about the US
when people abroad asked me about it. I am far
more interested in Eastern European affairs than
I was before. I have learned to love
traveling Oksana Yaworsky 05 CIEE,
Czech Republic Spring 2003 My three
months in Spain were the best of my entire life.
Everything that I learned in the classroom was
more meaningful and relevant. We learned about
Moorish architecture, and then saw it, analyzed
the symbolism in works of art and then saw the
actual pieces, read a short story by Galdós and
then walked the streets that he wrote about.
There was no division between my academic life
and my personal experiences the two were
constantly feeding into one another. I
learned a lot about myself, and I think I came
back to the U.S. changed for the better.
April Eakin 05 Ursinus in
Madrid Spring 2003
52 Student comments about Study Abroad Being
abroad during Sept. 11 was a unique experience
that proved both challenging and helpful. We came
home with a perspective like no one
elses. Ryan McLeod, 04 Ursinus
in Florence Fall 2001 I had absolutely no
interest in art before this program. The
instructors opened my mind to the art
world. Lindsay Alleger, 04 Ursinus in
Florence Fall 2002
53Student comments about Study Abroad
- I have become a more worldly person with
broader views. After seeing how other people
live, I am more grateful for what I have and more
frustrated that people in the US live so much
better than people in other parts of the world. I
am more grateful for things that we didnt have
in Kenya, such as internet, phones, 24-hour
electricity, paved roads, cold drinks, hot water,
etc. I feel more called to my career goals in
conservation, and I hope to be able to help
conservation efforts in Kenya either directly by
working there or indirectly by supporting
organizations that do. - Mark Zolandz, 04
- School for International Training,
- Kenya, Spring 2003
- I used to be very willing to let other
people make choices for me. Now I really question
things other people say and I dont take much of
anything at face value. Ive also gained an
appreciation for the rest of the world and the
US. I dont trust the news anymore, and I look
for what I believe and not just what Im told. -
