  • Outlines
  • Introduction.
  • Key Features of GPRS.
  • Advantages of GPRS.
  • Overview of GPRS service.
  • How GPRS Works?
  • Summary.

3
  • Introduction
  • Need for GPRS
  • Now, there has been an impressive growth in
    the mobile telephony, new
    technologies are being introduced. There
is going to be a tremendous need for wireless
    data service with high performance.
  • What is GPRS?
  • Generalized Packet Radio Services was
introduced in 2001and standardized in ETSI.
  • GPRS is based on a digital wireless technology
    called GSM.

4
  • Key Features of GPRS
  • User Specific Features
  • Speed data transmission speed171.2 kbps
  • Immediacy GPRS is referred as always connected
service. No dial up connection needed.

5
Continue
  • Network Specific Features
  • Packet Switching GPRS implements this technology
overlying the circuit switched of GSM.
  • Spectrum Efficiency The actual number of users
supported depends on the application used.
  • GPRS should improve the peak time capacity of
    GSM network.

6
  • Advantages of GPRS
  • Changing of the trend from circuit switched
transmission to the packet switched transmission.
  • GPRS provides very high speed of data
    transmission.
  • Packet switching of GPRS helps in the immediacy.
  • GPRS improving the peak time capacity of the GSM
    network.

7
  • Overview of GPRS Service
  • New GPRS radio channel are allocation of these
    channels is flexible.
  • GPRS allows SMS transfer over GPRS radio
    channels.
  • With GPRS enable mobile phones, services are
    received faster than GSM phones.
  • Three classes of of GPRS MSs are supported
  • Class A MS.
  • Class B MS.
  • Class C MS.

8
  • How GPRS Works?
  • Define the main component of GPRS.
  • GSN (GPRS Support Node).
  • SGSN (Serving GPRS Support Node).
  • GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node).

9
  • Sending data from MS to host
  • SGSN check the MS authorization
  • GPRS attach
  • PDP address
  • Session information PDP type,PDPaddress,

10
  • Sending packet from MS to SGSN
  • SGSN makes the following
  • Packet encapsulate
  • Examined the PDP address
  • Sending the packet to GGSN

11
  • GGSN receives the packet and makes the following
  • De-capsulate
  • Route the packet to IP network
  • IP routing mechanism
  • By the same manner we can sending data from host
    to MS

12
Summary
  • GPRS is a new technology of wireless system
  • GPRS provide immediacy of service implementation
  • GPRS support time division multiple access
  • GPRS phase 2 more advanced phase 1
