Students in MITACS
"The highest priority for MITACS and its
defining aspect is the recruiting, training,
and eventual placement of graduate students."
  • Approximately 80 of MITACS spending goes towards
    supporting students.

5
Students in MITACS
  • MITACS Canadian students boast an 82 employment
placement rate upon completion of their studies.
  • Canada has witnessed an unprecedented increase in
    graduate mathematics and computer science
enrolments since the creation of MITACS.

MITACS Resources for Students
  • Mobility Fund
  • Internship Program
  • Student Awards Program

9
The Mobility Fund
  • Supports the exchange of graduate students and
    postdoctoral fellows between projects in
    different regions of the country.
  • Contributes to the multi-disciplinary nature of
    network training.

10
The Mobility Fund
  • 500 for a paper presentation for out-of-town
    travel.
  • 1000 for participation in a MITACS event.
  • 5000 to spend up to four months visiting a
MITACS node outside of the home university.

11
Internship Program
  • This program funds interns to work on-site with
an organization to apply mathematical techniques
    to research issues.
  • Participating organizations include companies,
hospitals, government labs and agencies and
    not-for-profit societies.

12
Internship Program
  • Internship projects are 4 months in duration with
    opportunities for a second Internship.
  • An Internship involves a research project related
to a graduate students Masters or PhD thesis.
  • Each internship project receives 15,000 in
    funding.

13
Student Awards Program
  • The Student Awards Program recognizes outstanding
achievements of MITACS students and post-doctoral
    fellows.
  • Each award consists of a certificate and a
    monetary prize of 1,000.

14
Student Awards Program
  • Awards
  • Best student paper for MITACS-related research (3
awards, one each for MSc, PhD and PDF).
  • Best novel use of mathematics in technology
    transfer (up to 3 awards).
  • Outstanding service to the Student Network (1
    award).

15
Student Advisory Committee
The SAC serves as a voice for the students within
MITACS by
  • organizing student orientated events
