Title: Global Drifter Program GDP
1Global Drifter Program (GDP)
Observations and plans in the South Pacific
2GDP purpose
GDP the principal component of the Global
Surface Drifting Buoy Array, a branch of NOAAs
participation to the Global Ocean Observing
System (GOOS) and Global Climate Observing System
(GCOS) and a scientific project of the DBCP.
Objectives Maintain a global 5ºx5º array
of ARGOS-tracked Lagrangian surface drifting
buoys to meet the need for an accurate and
globally dense set of in-situ observations mixed
layer currents, SST, atmospheric pressure, winds,
and salinity. Provide data processing system
for scientific use of these data.
These data support short-term (seasonal-to-inter
annual) climate predictions as well as climate
research and monitoring.

9FY2006 plans for deployments
20 drifters to be deployed off R/V Kaharoa
(Argo-chartered cruise, Wellington NZ to San Die
go, CA PI Dean Roemmich). 10 SVP, 10 SVP-Barome
ter. 10 SVP-B drifters ship
ped to New Zealand Meteorological Service.
10Overall deployment needs
The South Pacific (060ºS, 135ºE70ºW) has 343
5ºx5º boxes. GDP GOAL maintain a 5ºx5º array.
This will entail a significant effort,
requiring assistance from our operational
partners across the world!
