Title: Humanitarian Education Programmes
1Humanitarian Education Programmes for Scotland
2Who we are.
gt The British Red Cross helps people in crisis,
whoever and wherever they are. gt We are part of a
global network of staff and volunteers responding
to natural disasters, conflicts and individual
emergencies. gt We enable vulnerable people at
home and overseas to prepare for and respond to
emergencies in their own communities. gt When the
crisis is over, we help people to recover and
move on with their lives.
3All work carried out by the Red Cross and Red
Crescent Movement is based on 7 Fundamental
Principles that underpin our core values

10Institutionalising Development Education
The overall goal is to develop a programme of
development awareness that can be adapted by the
target audience (trainee teachers, established
teachers and peer educators) and that can be
institutionalised within the relevant education
institution. This approach is then supported by
the development of a whole school approach to
further embed development awareness into the
classroom.
11Development Education
Development education aims to raise awareness and
understanding of how global issues affect the
everyday lives of individuals, communities and
societies and how all of us do and can influence
the global society we live in as ACTIVE GLOBAL
CITIZENS.
12Development Education encompasses the following
principles
gt It enables pupils to understand the links
between their own lives and those of people
throughout the world. gt It increases
understanding of the economic, social, political
and environmental forces which shape our lives. gt
It develops the skills, attitudes and values
which enable people to work together to bring
about change and control of their own lives. gt It
works towards achieving a more just and a more
sustainable world in which power and resources
are more equitably shared.
13Humanitarian Education
The Humanitarian Education strategy is based
around two core areas of Red Cross work which
contribute directly to development education
themes gt Conflict - conflict, citizenship, social
justice,human
rights,interdependence,values/perceptions, gt
