3 Internet Searching
Know the differences between directories, search
engines, and meta-search engines.
Directories are compiled by real humans who
thoughtfully and deliberately categorize and rate
pages. Examples are Yahoo and the Open Directory
Project. Search Engines are powered by
robotic crawlers or spiders that find and index
specific words or strings in web pages. Examples
are Google and Infoseek. Meta Search Engines
run a query through multiple engines at the same
time. Examples are Dogpile and Vivisimo.
4 Internet Searching
Know the differences between directories, search
engines, and meta-search engines.
In General, use directories for more
general, well-defined subject matter, use search
engines for more specific searches for a
particular string of words, and use meta search
engines when neither of those two options yield
many hits.
5 Internet Searching
The Go for Broke Search
Imagine a very specific string of words in
the perfect web page that would answer your
question, and run that string in quotes
through a search engine. If you get a hit, it is
most likely what you want. If not, broaden the
search by shortening the string.
6 Internet Searching
The Nested Search
Start with a broad search and chisel away at
the hits if there are too many. You can use the
Search within results feature of some search
engines to nest your search in this way.
7 Internet Searching
Inclusive and Exclusive Searches
You can use the OR connective to broaden
your search by including variant strings in the
same query.
You can use the minus sign (-) to limit your
search by excluding certain strings from the
query.
