2The Practice of Chemistry
Book Purpose and Goals
- One-semester introductory chemistry course
- For students with little or no background in
science and math - Written as preparation for a course in general
chemistry or general, organic, and biochemistry.
A Preparatory Chemistry Text
3The Practice of Chemistry
Instructional Strategy
- Introduce students to chemistry as it is
communicated verbally, symbolically, and
quantitatively - Build skills in problem-solving, mathematics, and
scientific reasoning - Consistently apply skills in practical situations
A Preparatory Chemistry Text
4The Practice of Chemistry
Educational Approach
- Support deep learning that is best done in a
context where students carry out meaningful
operations - Part 1 provides context for operations with
chemical examples - Parts 2 and 3 bring out the power of these
operations with quantitative work

9The Practice of Chemistry
Teaching Flexibly Quantitative Concepts can be
Taught Early
Start with Chapter 1, then go to the nomenclature
sections of Chapters 2 and 3. Introduce the mole
concept with Chapter 4, then discuss
calculations, metric system, and molar mass
problems in in Chapter 6, 7, and 8. Go back to
Chapter 5 and then to Chapter 9 for a more
concentrated discussion of chemical reactions and
chemical stoichiometry. Present the remaining
material in Chapters 2 and 3. This order is
used by the authors!

11The Practice of Chemistry
Features Chapter Practicals
The Chapter Practicals in each chapter present
particular themes related to the way chemistry is
done or used. The Practicals provide a unifying
theme for each chapter and connect chemical
concepts to a situation outside of the classroom.
Students are able to answer the questions in
the Practicals using the concepts and
problem-solving methods presented in the chapter.

14The Practice of Chemistry
Features Chemistry as practiced by chemists
- The practice of chemistry uses methods that
reflect the chemistry in the process of the
problem solving. - No algorithms. Ask what is the chemical system
doing here? - With masses and moles, use the chemical
quantities to map the units, and then add the
numbers.

Study icons Key idea icons appear next to
concepts that are vital to understanding the
chapter and to solving its problems. Remember it
icons mark tables, equations and facts that
should be memorized. Make the connection icons
appear where material from earlier chapters is
referenced and used.

Features Integrated Mathematics
Making it work with mathematics
Where it all started The Practice of Chemistry
grew out of a National Science Foundation program
grant to integrate mathematics and chemistry
education. This seven-year old program, called
MATCH, continues to be taught and was the basis
of our engagement with one of the key challenges
in preparatory and general chemistry getting
students to use math well, especially algebra, in
problem solving.

Making it work with mathematics
What it means in this text The Practice of
Chemistry retains the findings of the MATCH
program through its Making it work with
mathematics sections. These special sections,
integrated throughout the text, present
mathematical concepts where they are most needed.
The terminology links to the common treatments
of algebra found in high school and intermediate
algebra textsdemonstrating to students that they
have seen this mathematics before.

Proportional reasoning
The treatment of mathematics in the Practice of
Chemistry draws on proportional reasoning in
converting from one unit to another. When two
terms are related by direct variation,
proportional reasoning implies y kx or The
k in this equation can be any valid ratio for
the y and x.

27The Practice of Chemistry
Features Integrated Mathematics
Proportional reasoning
- The book emphasizes the use of proportional
reasoning and the conversion factor method in - Chemical formulas and reactions (mol / mol
ratios) - Metric conversions (metric prefixes for ratios)
- Mass to mole conversions (molar mass)
- Mole to atom conversions (Avogadros number)
- Solution stoichiometry (molarity)
- Mass to volume conversions (density)
- Students come to see these operations as
mathematically simple!

Features Web Page and Web Tutor
Organized learning resources the home page The
Web pages we have developed incorporate several
features that let students pull together, or
integrate, what they are doing in the course.
These include links that provide information, let
students review what they have learned, and allow
them to interactively develop their learning.

Resources for visualization the Web
animator Throughout the book illustrations that
involve images in molecular and extended
structures are included as images viewable
through the online Web animator. This makes use
of the downloadable program WebLabViewer
Lite. This feature is more than just an add on.
Some chapters include Web problems that require
the students to examine and manipulate animator
images.

tutor There are several cases where we have
provided students with access to an interactive
program that supports their interactive problem
solving. These links are the texts Web tutor.
These are based on scripts developed from actual
