Defined

• 1500s- Big shift from Medieval thinking
• Will question that Earth was the center of the
  universe (Church belief)
• People begin to question nature of God when
  discover laws of the universe (science vs. faith)
• Belief that mathematical laws governed nature and
  the universe and could be known, managed and
  shaped by people!

Key Figures in Astronomy

• Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a heliocentric
  (sun-centered) model of the universe
• Tycho Brahe set up an astronomical observatory to
  provide evidence
• Johannes Kepler calculated the elliptical orbits
  of the planets moving around the sun
• Galileo Galilei used a telescope to look at the
  planets and also claimed that Earth moves around
  the sun

Church uproar!

• Galileo only one who got in trouble for these
  ideas!
• The Inquisition questioned him
• He was under house arrest for the rest of his
  life AND he had to take back what he said

The Scientific Method

• Renaissance rediscovered Greek philosopher,
  Platos, teachings- look for natures truths with
  math
• Francis Bacon- stressed experimentation and
  observation to discover truth, I think therefore
  I am, wanted discoveries to be have practical
  uses
• Scientific Method is the step by step process of
  discovery
• Propose a hypothesis
• Test the hypothesis
• Repeat the work to confirm and refine the
  hypothesis

• Rediscovered the work of Galen
• Andreas Vesalius- first accurate study of human
  anatomy by having connections to autopsy dead
  bodies
• William Harvey- first to describe the circulation
  of blood
• Anton van Leeuwenhoek- uses microscope to see
  cells and microorganisms

• Chemistry from tradition of alchemy in Middle
  Ages (that any substance can be transformed into
  another, like gold from metal)
• Robert Boyle
• explained all matter as being made up of tiny
  particles
• difference between elements and compounds
• explained effect of temperature pressure on
  gases

• Nature follows laws, and all motion in the
  universe can be measured and described
  mathematically
