Introduction to Geography

• In geography we study different areas or themes
• There are five themes
• 1. Location
• 2. Place
• 3. Human/Environment Interaction
• 4. Movement
• 5. Regions

Location
Specific location Port Hardy (city)

• We study regions
• Some have a specific location pinpointed by a dot
  on the map
• E.g.. Vancouver
• Some are general areas that cant be
• E.g.. Rocky Mountains
• British Columbia

General location Vancouver Island

Place

• "Place" refers to the physical and human features
  that are found on our earth
• Physical mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes
• Human cities, roads, dams, bridges

Human/Environment Interaction

• How humans react to their surroundings
• We do it by
• a. adapting
• b. modifying
• c. depending
• on our environment

Adapting to our Environment

• by building houses and other buildings for
  shelter
• by organizing cities and towns near water and/or
  other resources we need
• by building roads and bridges to get around

• Ideas are moved through transportation and
  communication links across vast geographic areas
• Movement of ideas can be
• -language slang terms (phat), foreign words
  (jihad)
• -religion Buddhism moved from India to China
• -music rap music made its way from the American
  South

• People move across provinces,
• countries, and continents
• They bring with them their
• Beliefs (religious)
• Culture (stories, songs, art)
• Technology (tools, methods)

• Can be transported by sea, land and air
• Examples
• Clothing
• Cars
• Textiles (food)
• CDs

Regions

• Are general areas that are tied together by
  physical and human features in one place
• Regions formed by human characteristics
• China town, Jerusalem
• Regions formed by physical characteristics
• Rocky Mountains, Sahara Desert

Themes of Geography Poster Assignment

• Using your PowerPoint notes, create a poster with
  pictures representing each of the five themes of
  geography
• Title your poster, and label each picture with
  the corresponding theme
• Attach a small explanation how the picture
  relates to the theme
• Poster must be neatly glued and labeled in ink
