    BEFORE PEOPLE CAME HERE. NATIVE PLANTS ARE THE
    BEST PLANTS TO PLANT BECAUSE THEY DONT NEED VERY
    MUCH WATER AND THEY ALWAYS PRODUCE FOOD FOR THE
    NATIVE ANIMALS THAT LIVE HERE.

    OR TRAINS. SOME CAME IN AS ORNAMENTAL PLANTS FOR
    THE NURSERY PLANT BUSINESS AND HAVE BEEN SOLD TO
    PEOPLE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

MELALEUCAEXOTIC / INVASIVE
  • THE MELALEUCA, ALSO KNOWN AS PAPERBARK TREE,
    CAJEPUT TREE, AND WHITE BOTTLEBRUSH TREE, IS AN
    EXOTIC AND INVASIVE SUBTROPICAL TREE IN THE
    EUCALYPTUS FAMILY. IT HAS SPONGE LIKE WHITE
    PAPER-LIKE BARK. IT CAN GROW TO 50 FEET IN
    HEIGHT. THE 1-2 INCH LONG,GRAY-GREEN,LEAVES
    SMELL LIKE CAMPHOR WHEN THEY ARE CRUSHED. ITS
    FLOWERS ARE WHITE, BRUSH-LIKE SPIKES AND ITS
    FRUITS ARE SMALL,WOODY BUTTON LIKE SEED CAPSULES.
    THIS PLANT HAS TAKEN OVER THE EVERGLADES! IT
    HAS CROWDED OUT THE NATIVE PLANTS AND HAS DRIED
    UP THE WETLANDS.

  • THE GUMBO LIMBO IS ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST
    INTERESTING NATIVE TREES OF COASTAL RIDGES AND
    SUBTROPICAL HAMMOCKS IN SOUTH FLORIDA. THE GUMBO
    LIMBO TREE REACHES A HEIGHT OF 60 FEET TALL.
    THE GUMBO LIMBO IS DECIDIOUS AND WILL SHED IT'S
    LEAVES IN THE FALL. THE TREE NEVER LOSES IT'S
    FOILAGE COMPLETELY. BIRDS AND SQUIRRELS LIKE TO
    EAT THE FRUITS.
