The Challenge of Metadata Extraction

• Few content providers use a standard repository
  software installation
• Existing collections are held in a large amount
  of different databases, implemented using
  differne technologies and custom applications
• Some sort of manual operation is required to get
  metadata out of their original systems and into a
  format acceptable by a target repository software
• In this process, information on deletion and
  updates of previously harvested data needs to be
  preserved
