  • What are the negative aspects that are associated

15
  • By definition it is elitist with large amounts
of resources being directed at a few performers
at the expense of the foundation and
    participation levels.
  • Too much at stake encourages cheating drugs,
    diving in football, etc.
  • Physical and mental burn-out of performers due to
over training and demands of competition

Talent ID
  • The search for talent needs to start as far down

Talent ID
  • Schools are the best place to reach a maximum
    number of children.
  • Individual sports also need to avoid any type of
discrimination which would reduce the base of the
    pyramid

Elite Performers
  • Discrimination?- At the Sydney Olympics 60 of
British medals were were won by performers who

How to address this imbalance.
  • NGBs need to open their sport to a more diverse
    population
  • i.e. Lawn tennis developing the sport in the
    inner cities
  • Facilities, coaches, development officers, scouts
    etc.
  • Funding is needed for the points above
  • Discrimination attitudes need to be challenged
  • Role models/sporting ambassadors need to promote
    the sport

22
Sytematic Policy for Talent ID
  • Some talent is identified through sporting
success but other potential performers may miss
    out
  • Some Eastern Bloc countries were far more
    proactive, identifying sports that individuals
should pursue to make best use of their physique
    and abilities
  • More and more countries are using this systematic
approach to identify talent (i.e.Sporting Giants)
