  • Born May 23, 1862 in Houcktown, Ohio
  • William contracted spinal meningitis when he was

  • Meningitis caused him to lose his hearing
  • However, his love for baseball did not stop
    because of his deafness
  • Earned his education at Ohio School for the Deaf

The Beginning
  • William Hoy played Major League Baseball for the
    Cincinnati Reds and Washington Senators
  • He was started at only 60 a month
  • Nickname Dummy Hoy
  • His teammates started calling him "Dummy" because
    of his deafness

1880s-1890s
  • 1886, he began his baseball career in Oshkosh,
    Wisconsin
  • 2 seasons later Hoy was traded to the Washington
    Senators, his 1st major-league team
  • 1890, Hoy joined the Buffalo Brotherhood team
  • American Associations St. Louis Brownsthe best
    team Hoy had played for so far

  • After be traded from various teams he was sold to
    the Cincinnati Reds
  • He stayed here for 4 seasons, his longest stay on
    a team
  • 1898 Hoy was again traded Louisville Colonels
  • May 1, 1901, Hoy hit the first grand-slam home
    run in the newly-formed American League

  • May 16, 1902, first time in major-league history
    that two deaf players faced each other
  • 1924, worked at Goodyear as a personnel director
  • Coached Goodyear Silents baseball club
  • 1951, Hoy was unanimously voted the first player
    to be entered in the American Athletic
    Association of the Deafs Hall of Fame

1960s
  • October 7, 1961- Hoy tossed the first ball at
    Opening Day of the third World Series game in
    Crosley Field
  • Became ill and was hospitalized
  • December 15, 1961- Hoy died of a stroke
  • He was 6 months shy of his 100th birthday he
    hoped hed reach it and almost did

  • Throughout career Hoy stole 605 bases
  • Invented the hand signs the umpires use
  • Created signs for safe, out, strike, ball, etc.
  • These signs became accepted by all umpires for
    all games, not just the ones in which Hoy played
  • Signs are still used in todays baseball and
    softball games
