Accomplishments

• 1. Converted additional 230 NOAA VHS tapes from
  analog to digital formats, including  AVI
  (serving as digital master copy), DVD (for off
  line use and circulation), and MOV and MP4 (for
  future online access server space permitting)
• Reviewed (AQ) over 1050 digital video files
• Two DVD discs were sent back for correction
• 2. Over 20 videos in MOV and MP4 formats are
  currently available online in NOAALINC.
• Example includes "TIROS 40 years of
  discovery", 16 min., 3 sec. film available in
  NOAALINC at  http//www.lib.noaa.gov/uhtbin/cgisi

• 3. Inventoried over 190 BETACAM (out of ca. 300)
  in preparation for conversion
• Workflow discussed and agreed upon
• First batch of 32 BETACAM tapes shipped

Plans for FY 2010

• Convert ca. 100 Betacam SP tapes (from the NOAA
  Climate Program Office, and NESDIS Visualization
  Lab) to DVD, AVI, MOV, and MP4 formats for use in
  the library, ILL (Interlibrary Loan), and online.
  
• In tape selection, focus on upcoming 50th
  Anniversary of TIROS-I, first meteorological
  satellite, launched April 1, 1960)
• Catalog all selected tapes into NOAALINC, library
  online catalog, and into WorldCat, worlds
  largest bibliographic and reference database
  (147mln records, 71000 libraries, 112 countries)
• Provide online access to the selected,
  historically unique NOAA videos. Present some of
  them during the librarys brown-bag seminars.
