Importance of Technology in Education

• Provides students with more resources for
  learning.
• Exposes teachers to more effective ways of
  teaching.
• Allows students to keep up in a fast paced
  society.
• Teaches students to be self sufficient.

What is the Digital Divide?

• The gap between those individuals and
  communities that have, and do not have, access to
  the information technologies needed for modern
  advancement.
• Once focused on school computer access between
  rich and poor schools, now refers to internet
  access and technology related skills.

Who does it Effect?

• Groups generally discussed in the context of a
  digital divide are
• Socioeconomic (rich/poor)
• Racial (white/minority)
• Geographical (urban/rural)
• Developed/Undeveloped countries

Statistics

• 91 of children grades 3-12 use computers.
• About 59 use the internet.
• 37 of poverty level families have computers at
  home compared to 88 families with incomes of
  75,000/year and above.
• 47 of students use home computers for homework
  and 45 use them to connect to the internet.

Possible Solutions

• 1) Training teachers to promote the potential of
  technology in the education.
• 2) Offering free or inexpensive Internet access
  to schools.
• 3) Fostering the capacity to develop the content
  of instructional resources to their respective
  national languages.
• 4) Building well-maintained facilities that can
  be used to access knowledge and provide
  affordable, upgradeable, skills and services.
