3A new alternative Symbolic Authoring
- What it is and how it works
- Example of a special type of SA system
- WYSIWYM editing
4Symbolic Authoring
- A method of producing multilingual documents
without translation
5Symbolic Authoring ...
- Allows an author to create and edit the
knowledge source of a document - The author builds the underlying meaning of the
document by interacting with the
(language-independent) domain model - The author is a domain specialist
- The result is high-quality drafts
- A single information update will suffice to make
the necessary changes in all output documents

10Interface to SA systems
- Graphical editors
- require specialist training
- visualisation problem can quickly get out of hand
- Ideally, one would want interaction to be in
natural language - but without the parsing problem
- and with authors able to write in their preferred
language
11A new approach to SAWYSIWYM Editing
- A text-based interface to Symbolic Authoring
- while still avoiding text interpretation

21Conclusions
- WYSIWYM editing allows a domain expert to
construct a KB using very simple and intuitive
methods - anyone can use it
- doesnt require training in KR
- doesnt require linguistic expertise
- models can be built/edited by several people, not
necessarily in the same language or at the same
time
22When used for document generation
- Multilingual documentation can be produced
without many of the problems associated with
translation, e.g. - no problems associated with language
interpretation - no source-language bias
- Document management should be much easier
- updates made to knowledge not text
- different language versions will all say the same
thing
