Title: T.S. STATE OF MAINE

1
T.S. STATE OF MAINE
  • Sound Powered Phones

Waldo P. Harmon Certified I.C. Specialist Ships
Electrician
2
A phone system that needs no external power source
  • TWO (2) Independent circuits
  • SOUND OPERATED
  • Talk Listen Communication Circuit
  • VOLTAGE OPERATED (Magneto generated voltage)
  • MAGNETO small hand cranked electric generator
    (AC - 96 volts)
  • Selector Bell Circuit

3
Talk Listen Circuit
  • Handset
  • Consists of Earpiece Mouthpiece
  • Has Pushbutton to connect it to the circuit
  • Headset
  • Consists of Ear Muffs Mouthpiece
  • Ear Muffs are always connected to the circuit
  • Mouthpiece has pushbutton used to connect the
    mouthpiece when you talk

Principle
  • Two cans connected by a single wire
  • Speak into one can, the bottom vibrates and the
sound wave travels along the wire causing the
bottom of the other can to vibrate, duplicating
    the original sound
  • Your ear/brain can decipher the sound wave (Sine
    Wave) reproduced
  • SP Handsets or Headsets AMPLIFY the sound
  • Using two (2) wires and either CANTI-LEVER or
CARBON-GRANULAR technology to react to your
    voice.

5
Canti-Lever
  • This matches closely the old can bottom
    technology
  • A diaphragm vibrates causing a lever to move back
    and forth between the magnets
  • This creates an electrical Sine Wave
  • MUCH HIGHER AMPLIFICATION results
  • This is basically old and seldom seen today!

6
Carbon Granular
  • Modern style (TSSOM has this type)
  • Vibrations from your voice
  • Shakes, loosens and or disturbs the carbon grains
    in the magnetic field
  • Results in a resistance change
  • In turn a voltage variation now develops the SINE
    WAVE
  • AGAINAMPLIFIED Sine Wave capable of traveling
down the wires between the connected devices

7
OPERATING Handset
  • This is a COMBO device consisting of
  • IDENTICAL
  • Mouthpiece and earpiece in a handset style
  • PUSHBUTTON
  • Used to connect the device to the circuit.
  • IMPORTANTKEEP IT PUSHED AT ALL TIMES
  • It simply connects the device to the circuit and
does not have any other function
  • Push the button and you can HEAR/LISTEN or SPEAK
  • Equally IMPORTANT
  • A quiet environment helps you to hear and others
to understand what you are saying

8
HANDSET Trick
  • Remember
  • The earpiece and mouthpiece are identical
  • IF you suspected the mouthpiece was defective you
    can
  • TALK /SPEAK into the earpiece and the person(s)
on the other end will hear you.
  • You MUST keep the button depressed to stay
    connected
  • You must return the earpiece to your ear to
    listen
  • This works.try it youll like it!
  • You now know more than 90 of the people who use
    sound powered phones!

9
Headset
  • Consists of Earmuffs
  • These are always connected when plugged in.
  • Being muff style they exclude exterior noise
    making it easier to hear.
  • Also have a breastplate style Mouthpiece
  • The mouthpiece has an integral pushbutton used to
    talk/speak
  • Has a strap for your neck to hold the breastplate
in the proper orientation for you to depress the
    button and speak into it

10
TALKING
  • The LOUDER you speak into the mouthpiece the more
voltage/current is generated and transmitted to
    the other end device.
  • TRANSMITTER to RECEIVER(s)
  • Multiple persons can be on the same circuit and
as long as they have their button depressed
keeping them on line they will hear what is being
said by anyone talking. (Earmuff style always
    hears)
  • CAUTION
  • DO NOT HOLLER (Shout) (over modulation results)
  • This will cause voice DISTORTION with too much
    amplification
  • Loud is goodTOO LOUD is not good

11
USEFUL hints
  • Speak DISTINCTLY that is CLEARLY
  • Loud but not too loud
  • Slowly but not too slow
  • DO NOT Whisper
  • DO NOT MumbleEnunciate!
  • Keep tone, volume and rhythm of speech right
through till the endDO NOT Die-Out! (Drop your
    volume at the end)
  • Try to be in a QUIET area. This helps hearing
    and speaking.
  • THINK of the others on the circuitThey MAY be in
    a very noisy area.
  • ABOVE ALLBe as brief as possible while insuring
you convey the message that is needed by the
    others on the circuit.

12
SELECTOR BELL CIRCUIT
  • Some phone stations are equipped with
  • Numbered Dials
  • Hand Cranks
  • Bells external or internal
  • These stations and the associated dials and
    cranks
  • will work whether or not you touch the dials or
    cranks
  • They are always on if you simply push the button
    on the handset.

13
SELECTOR BELL CIRCUIT Continued
  • The whole purpose of this bell circuit is to
  • Alert another station that you are on the circuit
  • To use
  • Dial the station number
  • Wind the crank smartly
  • The station you selected has an installed bell
that will ring alerting that station that someone
is on the circuit and wishes to talk
  • Want a third or fourth station to be alerted?
  • Simply select that station and again crank
    smartly.
  • Do this for all the stations you want alerted.
  • REMEMBER bell circuits have nothing to do with
the TALK function it is simply an alert.

14
Additional accessories
  • Amplifiers for external speakers.
  • This allows groups of people in a space to hear
what is being said on the circuit.
  • Relays for lights, sirens, bells which may be
powered by 110 volt or other voltages.
  • This allows for alerts in noisy or large spaces.
  • Hear Here booths
  • These are located in noisy spaces so you can
stick your head in to hear and talk.
  • Remote jacks
  • Allows for plugging in at remote locations or
jacking headsets into phone boxes. These may or
may not have any accessories attached.
  • Selector Switches for voice circuits
  • Allows for transferring call rings from one
location to another. Example Bridge Wings
