Sample writing Human beings are creative, and
many scientific achievements have been made in
our history. Some new discoveries have very
practical consequences, such as new agriculture
methods, while others, such as Newton's and
Einstein's theories, have improved our
understanding of nature and the universe.
However, only a few scientific achievements have
affected both our daily life and our knowledge of
the world. In my opinion, the discovery of
electricity is the greatest scientific
achieve- ment ever, because it made it possible
for us to control our environment, develop new
technology, and build large cities. In the 21st
century, it is easy to forget that in old days we
were forced to follow the rhythm of the sun. We
could only work during the day. Homes were lit by
candles or flames, but the light was weak and
polluted the air. The situation created many
problems-family life was limited to a few hours
at best, especially if the parents had to work
during the day. During the winter, especially in
the north, days were very short. When we learned
to use electricity to light our homes,

we suddenly had many more hours to spend. Few
scientific achievements have led to so many new
inventions as the discovery of electricity.
First, scientists learned to use electricity to
run engines. Then, they discovered ways to use
electricity to help people communicate. The
telegraph made it possible for us to send
messages between cities and towns. When the
telephone was invented, almost everyone could get
in touch with friends and colleagues that lived
far away. Later, radio and TV brought news and
entertainment to our homes. In the last thirty
years, computers and cellphones have become an
important part of our daily life. All of
these inventions have made our life better, and
none of them would have been possible without
electricity. We wouldn't have the large, modem
cities we have today if it weren't for
electricity. The industrial revolution, which
transformed our way of life, depended in large

factories, which in turn meant that people
started moving into the cities. With telegraphs
and telephones, we could send messages to each
other over great distances, so that we could do
business with people in other cities and even
countries. In modem cities, electricity is used
for heating, lighting, cooking and for running

made our cities cleaner, safer and bigger.
No other scientific achievement has had a
stronger or longer-lasting effect on human beings
than electricity. It gave us more time to work,
study and play, it led to new inventions such as
TV, computers and cellphones, and it created the
big cities we live in today. When you, come home
tonight and turn on the lights in your house and
make a phone call or sit down to watch TV, ask
yourself what life would be like without
electricity.

in the People's Lib- eration Army made history.
Yang Liwei, from Suizhong County in Liaoning
Province, left the earth in the Shenzhou 5 Space
Capsule and became the first Chi- nese
astronaut. Yang Liwei was born in 1965. He grew
up in a happy family and did well in school. His
parents, both teach- ers, were proud to see their
son winning many maths competitions. When Yang
Liwei graduated from high school, he went to
study at the No. 8 Aviation College of the Air

Force of the People's Liberation Army. He
graduated with a Bachelor's degree and became a
fighter pilot. Yang Liwei was a good pilot and
was chosen, to- gether with 13 others, from 1,500
pilots for astronaut training. He worked hard and
passed the astronaut tests in 1996 and 1997. Yang
Liwei knew that he wanted to go into space. When
he boarded the Shenzhou 5 Space Capsule for the
first time as part of his training, he made up
his mind "I couldn't help feeling excited. I
decided that I must fly it." Yang Liwei's dream
came true. He was one of the three astronauts
chosen for China's first manned space flight...
and the rest is history.
