AGENDA
  • INTRODUCTION
  • Distribution Based Logistics
  • The DBL-Analyzer
  • Motivation
  • Project Overview
  • Basic Cycle
  • Commodities Modeled
  • Findings and Observations
  • Status

3
Distribution Based Logistics
  • Working Definition
  • DBL Is Management Of Inventory Flows, Rather Than
    Management of Inventory Levels.
  • Underlying problem is management of Inventory in
    Motion
  • This is emerging as an area of keen interest in
the military and commercial logistics communities.

4
DBL-Analyzer Motivation
  • Build a Simulated Environment In Which to Explore
    Distribution Based Logistics (DBL)
  • Explore the Viability of DBL
  • Explore the Challenges of Logistics Management in
    a DBL Environment
  • Explore the Challenges Involved in Building (or
    Specifying) a DBL Management System

5
The DBL-Analyzer
  • Project overview
  • Rapid prototype in Gensym G2
  • Designed as concept exploration tool
  • Maps are GIF background images
  • Most come from CIA public web site
  • Key metrics are rates
  • Flow rates measure inventory in motion
  • Fill rates measure inventory currently on hand
  • Units specify logistics requirements as
    consumption profiles, rather than through
    discreet requests.

6
DBL-A BASIC CYCLE(Class and Method View)
  • DBL-SLS
  • Single Log System
  • CONDUCT-DBL
  • SPLIT OUT COMMODITY-CONSUMPTION -PROFILES (CCP)
  • SEND TO IMMCS
  • DBL-IMMC
  • Matl Mgrt Centers
  • CONDUCT-DBL
  • ROUTE CCPs TO SOURCES
  • DBL-UNIT
  • CONDUCT-DBL
  • FILE CONSUMPTION -PROFILE (CP)
  • CONSUME
  • DBL-SOURCE
  • CONDUCT-DBL
  • HOLD CCPs
  • FILL CCPS
  • GET CONTAINERS
  • STUFF CONTAINERS
  • DBL-GL
  • Global Locations
  • CONDUCT-DBL
  • IF FINAL DISTINATION
  • PROCESS DP
  • ELSE
  • QUERY SLS TO PROVIDE DP NEXT HUB
  • DBL-DP
  • Distribution Platforms
  • CONDUCT-DBL
  • MOVE ALONG ROUTE TO NEXT POD Port of Debarkation

CCP ATTRIBUTES
MED
  • CCPs start off on the subworkspace of CPs, then
get transferred to the subwokspaces of
    DBL-Sources
  • Different CCP classes would allow different
    commodity breakouts

Findings and Observations
  • DBL Remains a Viable Alternative
  • Much More Detail Needs to Be Added to the
    DBL-Analyzer
  • DBL-A Is Relatively Easy to Integrate With Other
    G2 Logistics Models
  • SIMULOGS, Rock Drill
  • HLA Appears to Be Relatively Easy,
  • However a Target Federation Should Be Defined
    First

10
Findings and ObservationsDBL Remains a Viable
Alternative
  • Management of inventory in motion appears to be
    both doable and attractive.
  • Especially applicable to the fast moving world of
    modern military operations and electronic
    commerce.
  • An interactive interface appears to impart an
urgency to operators throughout the supply chain

11
Findings and Observations More Detail Required
  • DBL-A is currently too simplistic
  • Many other functions need to be added
  • freight consolidation , load throughput
    management, transportation network mgt.
  • Need to first develop business rules.
  • COTS transportation mgt. packages may help
  • Interface with GTN and commercial systems needs
    to be worked out

12
Findings and Observations re HLA
  • Experience gained in this project suggests, that
seeking HLA compliance for a single model such as
DBL-A may not be an effective use of resources.
  • Building a federation within the DOD logistical
modeling community and then as a community going
    through the Federation Development Process
(FEDEP) would seem to be more efficient.

13
DBL-A Status
  • Project Build 1 Completed for LIA in Aug 99
  • LIA may reuse some components in related
    logistical modeling efforts
  • Environment or components may be available for
use in other DOD log models
