Annual Yearly Progress Attendance Objective
Statistics
  • Michigan has chosen to use school attendance as
an additional indicator for Adequate Yearly
Progress for the elementary and middle school
grades. A school's attendance rate is calculated
as the aggregate total number of days of actual
attendance for all students in the school,
divided by the aggregate total number of possible
days of attendance for all students, based upon
each student's date of enrollment, times 100, to
obtain a percentage figure. The percentage target
for the state will be 90 attendance and will
remain in effect through 2013-14.. Schools above
this percent will be considered making AYP, for
    attendance.

WRAT Testing
  • WRAT-4 allows educators to examine students'
development of reading, spelling, and arithmetic.
At Huron Academy we use WRAT testing to evaluate
Kindergarten and 1st grade students Mathematic
    proficiencies.

9
About the Test
  • Description The Wide Range Achievement Test--4
(WRAT-4) is the fourth edition of the popular
test that was first published in 1936. Like the
earlier versions, the WRAT-4 contains three
subtests Reading (recognizing and naming letters
and words), Spelling (writing symbols, name, and
words), and Arithmetic (solving oral problems and
written computations). The authors of the WRAT-4
stress that the test is designed to measure basic
    school codes rather than comprehension,
    reasoning, and judgment processes.
  • Scoring The manual provided to teachers and
    administrators contains information to transform
the raw scores into standard scores.
  • Reliability The Rasch analysis provided
    person-separation and item-separation values and
these are given as evidence of internal
    consistency. Traditional internal-consistency
data, such as split-half or alpha coefficients,
are not provided and are needed. Test-retest
reliability coefficients range from .79 (Level 2
Arithmetic) to .97 (Level 1 Spelling), but no
indication of the time interval between test and
retest is given and the coefficients are based on
small samples for only a few age groups in the
    school age range.

10
Additional Information Validity WRAT-4 subtests
have moderately high correlations with
Woodcock-Johnson achievement subtests. The manual
supplies two sources of evidence for construct
validity person and item-separation values and
increasing raw scores with age. The manual
reports very high correlations (i.e., .91 to .99)
between the WRAT and WRAT-4, but the correlations
were calculated using the WRAT-4 norm sample and
an "arbitrary" sample of previously administered
WRATs. It appears that the correlations are not
based on a sample of subjects who took both
tests. Spruill and Beck found WRAT/WRAT-4
correlations of .98, .97, and .71 for the
Reading, Spelling, and Arithmetic subtests,
respectively. Norms A stratified national
sampling plan was used for the standardization of
the WRAT-R. A total of 5,600 subjects, or 200
subjects in each of 28 age groups from 5 to 74
years, composed the sample. Stratification
variables included age, sex, race, geographical
region, and metropolitan versus non-metropolitan
residence.

WRAT Analysis
  • In our third year of administering the WRAT-4
test in Kindergarten and 1st grade the data
easily shows that the students have grown an
average of 1 ½ grade points in mathematics.
  • Kindergarten classroom averages for this year
showed 1st grade and above achievement levels for
    students tested in math (1.3).
  • 1st grade proficiencies recorded scores well into
the 2nd grade level for math (2.7).
  • These scores are very promising and should
establish our students well moving into the
Scantron Performance series in the 2nd grade.

14
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)
  • DRA allows educators to examine students'
    development of reading, comprehension, and
fluency. At Huron Academy we use DRA testing to
evaluate Kindergarten and 1st grade students
    Reading proficiencies.

15
About the Test
  • Description DRA has helped ensure students
become independent, successful readers. The DRA
    helps educators
  • Identify students' reading achievement through
    systematic observation, recording, and evaluation
    of performance
  • Analyze data, document progress, and communicate
    assessment information to administrators,
    parents, and students
  • Drive effective reading instruction tailored to
    critical intervention points derived from
    assessment results
  • Methodology During the testing period your child
will read a benchmark book to the teacher and
then retell the story. The teacher then scores
your child on a range of skills, such as accuracy
of reading, comprehension, and fluency (ease of
reading and use of expression). DRA matches your
child to an appropriate level of text difficulty.
This system starts with level A, for the easiest
books, and then switches to numeric levels,
    running from 1 to 80.

DRA Analysis
  • In our inaugural year of administering the
    Developmental Reading Assessment test in
Kindergarten and 1st grade the data easily
establishes baseline data for us to use in years
    to come in reading.
  • Kindergarten classroom averages for this year
showed 1st grade and above achievement levels for
    students tested in reading (4.4).
  • 1st grade proficiencies recorded scores that
indicate higher 1st grade learning levels for
    reading (12.5).
  • These scores are very promising and should
establish our students well moving into the
Scantron Performance series in the 2nd grade.

18
Scantron Performance Tests
  • The Scantron Performance Series is a web-based
    computer-adaptive diagnostic test that's
reliable, valid, and standards-based. Our staff
can use it to pinpoint proficiency levels
instantly, place students in the appropriate
    programs, report progress, and predict
    performance on high-stakes tests.
  • With Performance Series, students take
individualized tests. The online test adjusts
automatically to each student's ability level,
generating more difficult questions if the
student is answering correctly and easier ones if
    the student is answering incorrectly.
  • Using Performance Series, individual teachers,
administrators, students, and parents all get the
test results they need. For example, the Student
Report shows individual student performance, so
classroom teachers get data to help them create
learning groups. The Summary Report shows average
performance data at the school level, so school
administrators can target curriculum areas in
    need of help.

Scantron Analysis
  • In our third year of administering the Scantron
test with 2nd grade through 6th grade students
the data easily establishes that the students
have grown at least an average of 1 grade level
in mathematics, reading and English language arts
    over that time.
  • Our 2nd grade students established a higher
baseline score than any of the three previous
    years in reading and ELA.
  • For all students tested 92 met expected gains
in mathematics, 74 met expected gains in
Language Arts and 68 met those gains for the
    reading evaluation.
  • These scores are very promising and continue to
prove that our students are making the progress
that we expect. Of course there is always room
for improvement and we will be using the tools
provided within the Scantron programming to
provide the help the students need.

30
Scantron Performance Test Notations
  • Having completed our third year with Scantron
and established baseline scores for reading and
mathematics we are pleased with the students
consistent progress in reading, mathematics and
language arts. We will certainly utilize the
data and remediation abilities of the program to
assist students in both reading and mathematics.
The national No Child Left Behind and
Michigans Education Yes initiatives focus on
reading and mathematics and in both of these
areas our students will benefit from the use of
    the Scantron diagnostic.

31
Michigan Educational Assessment Program
  • Michigan's MEAP tests are based on the Model Core
Curriculum Outcomes and the Content Standards
approved by the Michigan State Board of
Education. Huron has been administering the test
for ten years and have followed all guidelines as
established by the Michigan Department of
    Education.
  • During the 2008-09, 100 of all students in
grades 3 through 6 were tested including all
males, females, economically or not economically
    disadvantaged, students with or without
disabilities and all ethnic groups. All students
    were tested at Huron Academy.

32
About the Report
  • Long before the wide sweeping Federal legislation
known as No Child Left Behind mandated that
    States establish assessment systems and
accountability plans Michigan had in place data
driven diagnostics to assess Michigan students
mastery of state established standards. For many
years now the Michigan Educational Assessment
Program has provided public schools with the data
necessary to evaluate student learning and
further assess the effectiveness of classroom
instruction. The purpose of this report is to
disseminate for our families and the community at
large the results of this years battery of
testing. As required by the Michigan Department
of Education we will report all disaggregate
populations as well as provide helpful
comparative data to fully understand the impact
of the data collected. We will use graphs,
charts and brief narrative in an attempt to make
the data meaningful and display the successes and
challenges that our students face in meeting
    established state standards.

33
Report Specifics Aggregate Report An average of
all test taken by Huron Academy students will be
reported as a school average at each proficiency
level on the MEAP. Huron vs. The State To align
with our school mission and goals statement a
comparison will be made comparing the results at
Huron Academy with Statewide averages. Disaggrega
te Populations Whenever thirty or more of an
effected population are identified at any grade
level it is necessary to provide disaggregated
data for those groups. Disaggregate populations
can include gender, race, economic status,
special needs students and the like. Gender has
been established annually since Huron Academy
began taking the MEAP for every grade level while
the other groups are totally dependant on the
population taking the test.
34
Report Specifics (cont.) School-wide Statistical
Breakdown Data will be broken down by
individual classrooms, by individual grade level
tests and through annual trend analysis which
offer up to five year trend analysis for any
given grade level test. Comparative Analysis
To align with our school mission and goals
statement a number of comparisons will be made
comparing the results at Huron Academy with other
state and local districts and schools.
Specifically we will look at local public school
district results, other public school academies
in Macomb County and all Ferris State authorized
public school academies within the state.

Huron Academy 4-year trend 3rd Grade Reading
Percentages
  • 76 of our students performed at or above state
standards only 2 below the state average in the
3rd grade reading test. Huron will continue to
strive to reach this average and push on toward
    its mission goals.

46
Huron Academy 4-year trend 3rd Grade Writing
Percentages
  • Entering 3rd grade students had a slight drop in
proficiency rates with 48 of students meeting
state standards. The emerging trend of moving
our most challenged writers continues however
with only 4 in the most challenged group. With
continued development of the school writing
curriculum we expect to see improvements in
proficiency rates in the near future.

47
Huron Academy 4-year trend 3rd Grade Math
Percentages
  • With 93 of our students who met or exceeded
state standards this is consistent with last
years excellent results. These scores are well
above state averages and right on track for our
    school mission.

48
3rd Grade Analysis
  • Reading Huron students continued to grow on the
MEAP. With 76 meeting or beating expectation we
experienced some loses and gains in proficiency
categories from the previous year as we approach
    state averages.
  • Writing The writing curriculum continues to be
improved with a result of 48 of Huron students
who beat the MEAP. Also noteworthy was the
closing gap between Level 3 and 4 students with
only 4 scoring in the lowest category a very
    welcomed trend.
  • Mathematics With 93 of the Huron population
meeting state standards we are quite proud of the
students efforts. This represents a continuation
from the previous year as we continue to pace
ourselves well ahead of state averages. Numbers
like these certainly puts our goal of leading all
schools in the area, county and state within our
    grasp.

Huron Academy 5-year trend 4th Grade Reading
Percentages
  • Trends show consistency with 84 of the regular
population meeting standards or above this year
in reading, this is above the state average. All
this and not a single student scoring in the
lowest category this year, trends we expect to
see stay consistent. Huron has been consistently
scoring at or above the state averages for a
number of years, all this with increasing
    population.

54
Huron Academy 5-year trend 4th Grade Writing
Percentages
  • With an increase in population the scores for
writing proficiency took a bit of a dip this
year. We expect that with improvements to the
new writing curriculum we will once again be
seeing the kind of results that we expect from
    our students.

55
Huron Academy 5-year trend 4th Grade Math
Percentages
  • 92 of the regular population are meeting
standards or above this year in mathematics, our
very best showing in the 4th grade. Students
performing in the moderate category continues to
decline as expected with no students scoring in
the lowest category. All this despite increased
    population in the testing group.

56
4th Grade Analysis
  • Reading 84 of the population met or exceeded
state standards this year in reading, this is
above the state average and a 2 increase from
last year. Huron has been consistently scoring
at or above the state averages for a number of
    years.
  • Writing Despite a drop to 41 proficiency Huron
continues to have great hope for our newly
developed writing curriculum. We expect to see
    wide improvement in the future.
  • Mathematics - 92 of the population are meeting
state standards or above this year in
mathematics, our best showing ever. With trends
being consistent we expect this to continue in
    years to come.

Huron Academy 4-year trend 5th Grade Reading
Percentages
  • This year 80 of 5th grade student were
proficient in reading, despite increases in the
testing population. Huron students continue to
work at or above state averages and we expect
that we will continue to improve in the coming
    years.

63
Huron Academy 4-year trend 5th Grade Writing
Percentages
  • With over a 20 spike in the testing population
it is good to see 65 of the students showing
proficiency in the writing test. Positive
changes in our writing curriculum have certainly
made a positive impact on our students as we
continue to score above state averages for this
    test.

64
Huron Academy 4-year trend 5th Grade Math
Percentages
  • 82 of Huron 5th grade students all met or
exceeded state standards, for our best showing
ever for 5th grade students in mathematics.
These scores are above state averages. This year
there are also no students scoring in the lowest
    category, another first.

65
Huron Academy 5-year trend 5th Grade Science
Percentages
  • Trends show stable performance year after year
with 86 of the population meeting standards or
above this year in science, well above state
averages. We continue to move in a positive
direction and our students continue to perform
    well in science.

66
5th Grade Analysis
  • Reading 80 of Huron students met or beat state
standards this year. This continues a trend
where Huron students score higher than the state
    averages.
  • Writing - With a 65 proficiency results for this
years group of 5th grade students we are pleased
with the continued performance of our students.
Huron students are now 10 above the state
    averages for this test.
  • Mathematics - 82 of Huron 5th grade students all
met or exceeded state standards, staying
consistent with the last 2 years base scores.
These scores are above state averages and the
best that Huron has done in mathematics for 5th
    grade testing.
  • Science - Trends show stable performance year
after year with 86 of the population meeting
standards or above this year in science, our
highest percentage ever and consistent with state
    averages.

Percentages
  • Overcoming last years dip in scores this years
6th grade students scored 88 at or above state
standards for our best showing ever. Well above
state standards we are pleased with the direction
in which our upper classmen are headed.

72
Huron Academy 4-year trend 6th Grade Writing
Percentages
  • At 71 proficiency rate our 6th grade students
continue to score consistently well, this year
scoring a percentage point higher than our
previous best score. Only slightly behind state
averages we will continue to work with our
youngsters to insure improved scores in the
    future.

73
Huron Academy 4-year trend 6th Grade Math
Percentages
  • With an increase of 2 over last years scores,
this puts our 76 proficiency rate in line with
state averages and our highest percentage ever.
It is also important to note that no students
scored in the lowest category for mathematics
this school year. We are pleased with the
direction in which this trend is moving and
expect to continue in years to come.

74
Huron Academy 5-year trend 6th Grade Social
Studies Percentages
  • Reversing the trend of the past few years, 74 of
Huron 6th grade students reached proficiency in
social studies this year. This our fourth year
of exceeding the state mean scores in this area.

75
6th Grade Analysis
  • Reading 88 of Huron students met or exceeded
state standards this year, a 11 increase from
the previous year. Once again we have surpassed
the state averages for this test with one of our
    best showing ever.
  • Writing Continuing a school-wide trend toward
improved writing scores Hurons 71 proficiency
rate places the students just a couple percentage
points below the state average for this test.
  • Mathematics Once again moving above state
averages Huron students scored 76 on the 6th
grade mathematics test for our best score ever.
We expect to see this trend continue.
  • Social Studies 74 met or exceeded state
standards this year, a full 9 above the previous
years score. This is above the state average and
a trend that continues here at Huron.

76
Cross District Comparisonsfor 2008-09
  • As a part of the school mission Huron Academy
seeks to lead traditional public elementary
schools in Macomb County, in academic excellence,
as measured on state and national tests. One of
our goals is to lead all Macomb County elementary
schools on MEAP scores. These comparisons help
    us to gauge that progress.

77
Cross District Comparisonsfor 3rd Grade in
2008-09
  • In cross district comparisons Huron continues to
test strong in mathematics. Huron is just
percentage points behind all area district
schools scores for 3rd grade and has met Warren
in math. Other scores dipped a bit this year but
Huron is working hard to reach our goal of
    surpassing local district school scores.

78
Cross District Comparisonsfor 4th Grade in
2008-09
  • In cross district comparisons Huron is
competitive in all areas of 4th grade testing.
Huron is slightly behind most area district
schools scores for 4th grade but is ahead of
Warren in mathematics and has met the Warren
score in reading. Huron students have surpassed
the State averages in both reading and math and
will be working hard to reach our goal of

Closing Remarks
  • On the entire battery of 3rd grade through 6th
grade testing Huron Academy met or exceeded state
standards on 9 of 18 tests which clearly
illustrates room for growth and only indicates a
slight drop from last years high of 10 tests. It
is important to note that our students are within
percentage points of state averages on most of
the other tests and should continue to improve on
this mark in years to come.
  • Our State ranking among all Public School
Academies is 45 with 77.4 of our students
meeting or exceeding State standards. Hurons
ranking continues to improve year after year and
we are confident that this numbers will continue
    to improve.
  • Huron Academy ranks 3rd in Macomb county behind
Mt. Clemens Montessori and Prevail Academy who
were at 83 and 77.4 respectively. These are
both high percentages but not out of the realm of
    possibility.
  • Huron ranks 2rd among all Ferris State University
    authorized schools behind Marshall Academy.
Marshall scored a very respectable 84.6 and
Bridge just inched us out with 69.5 a mere 1.2
away from the results experienced by Huron
    Academy.
  • Among local district schools in the area Huron
Academy has made major progress compared to the
Warren Consolidated schools. In 3rd grade
testing Huron has surpassed Warren in math, 4th
grade in math and reading, 5th gade in all areas
except writing and finally has surpassed Warren
in all areas of 6th grade testing. Significant
movement toward our goal of leading all local
district schools in the MEAP Utica is next!!!

103
School Improvement Process
  • Huron Academy is proud to continue to be
recognized by the Michigan North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools as an
accredited institution. Huron has formed a
committee of teachers, parents, and the
administration to serve as the school improvement
team to work on the stated goals and continue the
process for North Central. The school improvement
team reviewed current assessment data to update
the School Improvement goals and measures on the
School Improvement Plan. The Huron staff
continues to work toward the goals established in
the School Improvement Plan to reach proficiency
in reading, mathematics, social studies, science
and social development as established in the
    plan.
  • Core Curriculum
  • All areas were reviewed by staff and
    administration. Improvements instituted this past
year included the addition of the Latin program,
curriculum mapping (Year-at-a-Glace) at all grade
levels and specialty areas, incorporation of the
new state science and social studies GLCEs,
introduction of MLPP and DRA assessments at
    Kindergarten and 1st grade.

104
Technology Plan
  • Huron Academy has developed and continually
updates its Technology Plan to meet the needs of
our students. New technologies and applications
are being explored to ensure that our students
will have the technology instruction necessary to
complete in todays high tech world.
