Ph.D. Exams
  • Exam should be scheduled and committee approved
    at least three weeks before the actual date. All
    exams are public, and posted on the WEB by the
    Grad School
  • Committee rules (Grad School / internal)
  • At least three faculty member and one outside
    member

    theorist, one outside of the research field...
  • Recently added by the Grad Committee At least
    50 of the committee and the chair should be
    regular faculty
  • Participation in Oral and Ph.D. exam committees
    is uneven

Written Exams
  • Qual Exam is now called Placement Exam. No
    change is rules (see September faculty meeting).
  • Comp exam Grad. Committee will review the role
    of this exam, will prepare a document summarizing
    traditions and goals. No (major) change is
    planned. Comments are very much welcome
  • is division to Breadth/Experiment appropriate
  • do we need a Theory section
  • astronomy faculty prepares 8 exam problems each
    year - is this OK?
  • exam represents
  • physics and astronomy as done in the Department?

  • Adding more problems on biological physics,
    advanced stat. mech, string theory....
