Title: Why Recycle
1Why Recycle?
- A Few Tahoma Senior High School Statistics and
Related Information
2Humans are ruining the earth!
- Out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean there
lies a man made island sometimes called
Gilligan's Island but most often referred to as
the Great Pacific Garbage Patch-- a mass of
plastic waste that covers over 537,000 square
miles, an area over twice the size of Texas.

6What can I do?
7Recycling saves resources!
- It saves earths resources
- It saves money
- It prevents waste
- It benefits everyone on earth
- It is easy to do, just look for blue
- Recycling containers
- Recycling cans
8This 25 yard container behind the kitchen is
dumped about twice a week at a cost of 123 per
dump plus 95 per tonnage in addition to a 62
monthly rental fee plus a 42.50 charge for
distance charge and then add taxes and hazardous
waste fees.
9This 25 yard container behind the auto shop is
dumped about once every two weeks at a cost of
123 per dump plus 95 per tonnage in addition to
a 62 monthly rental fee plus a 42.50 charge for
distance charge and then add taxes and hazardous
waste fees.
10- That added up to a cost of about
-
- last year!
35,000
11What creates so much garbage?
12What creates so much garbage?
13What creates so much garbage?
14What creates so much garbage?
151750 students 133 staff Hundreds of pounds of
garbage daily
16We take one to two of these totes full of garbage
out of the lunchroom daily.
17We take another three to four of these totes out
at night just from classrooms.
18And think of all the garbage can liners needed to
bag that garbage!
192,908.70
- Thats approximately what we spent last year just
on garbage liners. - Obviously, if we reduce garbage, we reduce the
use of liners which reduces cost and increases
the resources of earth that can be used for other
commodities.
20RECYCLE!
- That all adds up to a lot of garbage every day,
week and month of the year. Recycling can cut
this amount down tremendously!
21Recycling Containers
22- The recycling containers just shown are located
behind the kitchen. There are six of them. They
are four yard containers. They are dumped weekly.
The monthly charge to empty them is about 1,000.
23- That 1,000 is much less than the average monthly
garbage bill of about 2,917. If we could
increase recycling and decrease garbage, we would
save money every month. - It would be a huge savings over the years to come
not to mention lessening the load on our
environment.
24How much do we spend?
- You may be wondering. How much money is spent on
the paper products which ultimately end up in the
garbage?
25This is a box of paper towels.
26It contains 12 rolls.
27Each box cost 53.25
- Last year we used approximately 155 boxes of
paper towels. That totals - If we could reduce this usage, we could save
thousands of dollars and the environment. One way
might be through the use of hand dryers. We are
currently looking into this possibility.
8,252.75.
28Here is a box of toilet paper.
29It contains 12 rolls.
30Each box costs 30.31
- Last year we used approximately 200 boxes of
toilet paper. That totals 6,062. - Obviously we cant reduce toilet paper usage, but
the numbers show how much money is spent yearly. - Reducing in other areas will help offset the cost
of this particular commodity we use daily. And
PLEASE!...
31Dont Waste Paper!
32Conserve Water
33- Most the faucets in the building automatically
shut off after about ten seconds. This saves
water. If you use a faucet that doesnt
automatically shut off, be sure to conserve as
much water as you can. This will help reduce our
monthly water bill which averages about - per month.
1,500.00
34Conserve Power
35- Most lights in the building are on timers. This
helps conserve power. However, if you leave a
room and no one is there, shut the lights off
instead of waiting for the timer. This will save
energy. - Some light fixtures have less bulbs to help
conserve too. - Shutting off computers and other appliances saves
energy as well. - This all helps to reduce the monthly energy usage
bill which averages about
per month.
24,000
36Other ways to conserve
- Use faucets that shut off automatically
- Use low-flow toilets
- Conscientiously use less paper towels when drying
hands - Recycle plastic bottles, glass, milk cartons,
paper, cardboard and other permissible items. - Shut off lights or use timers
- Use lower wattage bulbs in lights
- Use energy-saving fluorescent bulbs
- Turn thermostats down a few degrees
- Go paperless when possible
- Use electronic paper
- Think before you use
37Recycling benefits everyone.
- We all can have a share in creating a sustainable
earth! - Here at the high school we are doing all we can
to conserve and save energy as well as creating
an atmosphere promoting recycling. - Do your part and others will follow.
- Recycle for life!
